Cotto really impressed me tonight not with just winning but with the way he won. I thought Gomez being a bigger guy would be able to at least go 12 and maybe even win a bunch of rounds. Wow was I wrong. Cotto literally was fucking toying with the guy like he was complete garbage. Gomez has some decent quality wins on his record but Cotto got in the ring with a swagger that I love. He probably could have finished the guy off in three but it's like he almost wanted to give the fans there money's worth and at least five-six rounds. His punches almost seems murderous. Cotto is the future of the welterweight division in my eyes now. Maybe everyone felt like that when he beat Quintana or Judah or Mosely but this win was just as important in my eyes because he won it with barely getting punched. It showed me that he won't ever beat himself, someone will have to be able to deal with the punishment or find a way around it to beat him.
With that being said. I feel that Cotto's next big fight either against Tony or against Floyd are both tossup fights though.
Tony is simply a monster at 147. Cotto fighting Tony would be one hell of a fight and I really do not know what will happen. Tony's not just big but he's sturdy as hell. That's what would worry me if I was Cotto's manager. Tony looks like it hurts to punch him. Margo's style will just provide more openings for Cotto though. Knowing that Cotto can box effectively leads me to give him the slight edge in that fight but Tony could just as easily overhelm him. Let's be honest, Cotto hasn't really fought a puncher since Torres except maybe Judah. And we saw in both those fights how he can still be hurt. He does come back though. Quite honestly, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Arum puts off the Cotto-Tony fight until later and finally give Clottey his title shot against Margo expecting Tony to win again and continue to build up Cotto's rep by calling out Floyd and keeping Cotto busy with decent fighters.
The Floyd fight is even more intriguing to me though. Cotto can do everything (box, fight on the inside, on the outside, counterpunch) pretty much and he might even be more effective than Floyd in doing it. But the one thing that Floyd still has on Cotto is speed. Cotto's hands are fast but Floyd's are faster. Floyd's defense/footwork is still the best in the game and he's still a master boxer when he needs to be. I'd give Floyd a very slight edge in that fight just because Floyd has the ability to take away his opponent's best weapon and use it against them. Ricky Hatton's MO is body punching and he couldn't find Floyd, ODLH calling card is his left hook and he might have landed 2 all night. But I don't think Floyd will be able to take all of Cotto's punches on his arms and shoulders like he usually does so Cotto has just as good a chance of winning the fight. This is why the fight is the most important fight in boxing today. A modern day Leonard-Duran.
