Default Wednesday Night Fights: Echols - Quillin

This is going to be a scorcher

I love the match ups where you have two mean guys getting in the ring with another, people who fought like they were mad all the time. Benn-McClellan, Hagler - Duran and more recently Casamayor-Campbell. Both of these fighters have that type of meanness if you know what I mean.

Granted Echols is only a shell at this point but in this bad run of his with no wins, he hasn't lost because of lack of effort. You can always count on him to fight hard and I really doubt Quillin strikes any fear in Echols, he's not a cowering guy. Also don't think he's going to crumble under Quillin's will, it's going to be a dogfight.

Quillin is just coming up though and he is dynamite. One of the most electrifying fighters in the ring today and no doubt he is going to knock everyone out until he gets knocked out imo. I haven't seen the 3 fights where he has gone to decision, but everytime I've seen him it's been almost impossible to fathom the he would ever be a guy to let up and drag to a decision. He possesses lightning speed and legitimate one punch power and doesn't waste it on jabs and lateral movement, lots of power punches.

One guy who does rely more on jabbing and circling is Chazz Witherspoon who is also fighting tonight, against a much lesser opponent. I haven't seen him in a while now, interested to see how he's progressing.

He's a decent boxer when he isn't pressing forward and firing power shots. That's been the failing of all the U.S. heavyweight guys recently, Guinn, Chambers and Brock all ultimately fell short of a title shot because they didn't possess any fire or confidence in moving forward. As a heavyweight, you are always going to have to have at least a streak of aggressiveness and I think it's important Chazz develops that because boxing behind a jab alone isn't going to cut it. He still seems to be struggling with that confidence in his own power but he looks great when he opens up, throws 100 punches a round and is fit enough not to tire out. Great stamina, but it's rare for him to show that out of the gate.

Tonight, he has a guy who's a few levels below him and has been knocked out before, hopefully he can make a statement, not drag this out and show that confidence in his own power that he can end the night early. I think we'll see that. I hope anyways.

And then on the undercard we have a few guys who are undefeated. Tommy Rainone I've seen before who is a pretty cocky guy with a bit of power, I imagine he will be on there.

    I'm ready for this one.

Heh, here we are again, it always seems like you, Spicoli, Diane and I are the four people that will be viewing this thread. Looking forward to seeing Quillin for the first time and Echols is always game. Another tough fight for Antwun. Chazz is fighting Domonic Jenkins, so I wouldn't get too excited about seeing that one. Jenkins will probably give another non-effort on way to getting stopped. Would like to see him take tougher guys on at this point.

Yep. looking forward to seeing this Kid Chocalate kat fight. There was one member here who talked like he was the next coming of Hagler. I think he lasted for about a week and then went to find greener pastures on EastSideBoobies

Basically, Mick might drop in and OumaFan, VD and others will watch but probably won't comment until the end of the thread and it'll be a 47 post thread with about 7 total people accounting for all of them. That's how these ESPN threads work out, don't get why, it's free boxing people

Yes that is Kid Chocolate. He's had big hype from the moment he turned pro, I heard about him for the first time when he was 1-0 and already in Everlast catalogs. He's good, might be one of the hardest hitters in boxing already.

Echols hasnt had a win since 2004 i think BUT many of his recent fights could have gone his way and they were against decent opposition. This is a big step up for Quillin. Il take Echols in this one.

Lords Gym was the 1st person I can remember mentioning and posting Quillin fights. The kids looked and I like the way they are carrying his career along.
    We'll see how Chazz looks...

Hopefully I can get home on time...

Yes I remember talking with LG about Quillin a lot, he was big on him and if I remember correctly he was big on Chazz too.

Good to see Echols staying active ,I though he took his last one.But his legs are memories and Quillin could get him midway if not sooner

That's probably because you're in New York sal and right now the Yankees game is airing on ESPN2 and that is blacked out because I assume YES is carrying the game in New York. You'll probably be switched over pretty soon, it's entering the top of the 9th now, last chance for the sox.
