Default Powerful Jab- Is this an illusion?

Recently I noticed a few of the pros in the gym really put their front foot down hard when they step into the jab.

So for the past few days I`ve tried it and I started to feel that my jabs had a bit more power and snap about them. But, is this actually whats happening, or is it similar to WWE wrestlers who stamp their foot down when throwing a punch to give the impression that its powerful?

A stiff jab is not only possible it is also highly useful.

I think we shoiuld all work on the speed of our jab, but we should also work on a stronger jab, which we could use on the defensive.

I usually move my feet the same, but when throwing a stiff jab, I throw it "across" the shoulder to benefit from my body weight.

What if you take a fighter like Jermaine Taylor.
In his fight with Pavlik, he had a light speedy jab.

In earlier fights like Hopkins he had a thudding jab, almost like a left cross.

Donny, It all depends where the back foot is in relation to the shoulder for drive and delivery. Also movement after the punch being in balance for where you want to be. One senario to get the idea is kicking a ball as hard as you can, when youve found the best way to drive the ball . Think where the back foot is in the relation to the shoulder for drive, thats where it should be after the jab

Here's a rare video of a young Pac (before MAB, EM, & JMM) talks/demonstrates about jab.

    Depends how you mean illusion..Lol

I mean.. Your jab is your jab.. it'll be hard or not.. If you got your technique okay then its gona be hard..

The stepping isnt making it any harder.. If you ask me i would assume that its just that your stepping with your jab.. which you should do.. its not your jab getting more powerful its just range..

You ever have someone tell you dont punch at his head.. punch through his head.. thats in effect what your doing.. stepping with the jab range gets better and you'l hit harder.

So urr.. Yeah illusion in a way.. but not.. Imo..

I understand what your saying Scrap.
    I'll write that down actually.

I felt that footwork is waht infleunces this alright.

If I stand side on, making my body a small target my jab is faster, more flicking and obviously less powerful.
I employ this at the start of a round as usually the opponent is fresher and more sharp defensively.

But then if I stand more square on with my feet almost at opposite sides of the hypotonuuse of an imaginary 90 degree triangle, I can throw the jab across my shoulder (and thus protecting my chin) with great power.
I use that when I'm very toe to toe to get distance or when the opponent is tired.

Sure you want to step into your punches but you don't want to over extend yourself because you give up balance which is bad.

Watch Wladimir Klitschko jab....he's got a quick and powerful jab.

If you think about punch in terms of momentum it's mass + speed so the faster you throw a punch then the harder it's going to hit and the more leverage you use on a punch then the harder it's going to land so either way you can increase the power of your jab

Another way of looking at it. Your back foot is your distance ie power, Front foot is direction. All your weight on your front foot means you cant direct, move it plus theres no weight where it should be to drive.

Cotto is a good example of some who steps down with his front foot and really puts some power into his jab.. It's not the sharpest jab i've seen, but his ability to follow the jab up if he even stuns you,, and the fact that he's prepared to take counters to keep coming forward, it is very effective.

The power of the jab alone is enough to wake his opponent up and you feel he could almost knock lesser opponents out with it if they were caught unawares by it.

Timing too is vital. You have to get your body into one fluid motion from the legs, hips through the shoulders and into the arm. A lot of people try to throw a punch (not just the jab) too hard and they mess up the body shape and lose out on the power. I was made to practice throwing punches in slow motion when shadow boxing so that I could see the position my body was in.
