Default Mayweather's claim to crush Wrestlemania's PPV record of 1.4 million stays a dream

WrestleMania 24, featuring Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. The Big Show, did well below the WWE's expectations. The event had a buyrate of 1,058,000 million buys with a profit number of $23.8 million. During a recent conference call with investors, the company denied paying Mayweather anywhere close to $20 million dollars. Most insiders says the real number is closer to $5 million.

Last year's WrestleMania 23 featuring Donald Trump had a buyrate of 1,200,000 and made $24 million dollars. The company was hoping to surpass last year's number by a significant amount with the involvement of Mayweather.
"Very few people really understand what it means to be a fighter. I hate it when I hear someone say, 'That fighter doesn't have guts. I hate that, I don't care if you're a world champion six times over or a four-round fighter, to step inside that ring, you have to have guts" Oscar De La Hoya

Did somebody forget to tell Vince Mcmahon that the fans don't particularly dig Floyd Mayweather? lol If he wanted that number surpassed he should have hired Oscar De La Hoya.

I'd like to know where you're getting this info. It would be strange for the PPV buys to be so low, considering that this Wrestlemania set the record for the biggest live gate of any WWE event.

It was reported from a Conference call to WWE investors. Not sure where it originated, maybe the WWE site? But here is another interesting tidbit:

"WWE Chief Operating Officer Michael Sileck told WWE investors in a conference call earlier today to discuss WWE’s first quarter financial results that the company did not pay Floyd Mayweather $20 million for working WrestleMania XXIV as reported."

It looks like it came from here: http://vmsvideo.wwe.com/corpbiz/2008...1st_q_2008.wma

Yea, how can anyone defend him fighting the Big Show for less than he would make to fight Miguel Cotto. It's a joke I tell you, especially considering The Big Show is so much bigger. Mayweather must have trained harder than he ever has in his life for that 5 mill

I guarantee you that Cotto will be getting at least 8 Million to fight Margarito. Do you think Cotto vs Mayweather would be a less lucrative fight?

It would be twice as big. Floyd would easily make 20 million vs Cotto. We all know Floyd loves cash

Oh I'm sure he would, wasn't really making any comment of what Floyd would make fighting any boxer.. But Five million to get in a ring and playfight, for one night, doesn't sound to bad to me.. If he could do that anytime he wanted why the hell box.

Agreed. Not that pro wrestling is without its risks, but 5 mil for one night, without the need of 2 months of hard, rigourous training, and without the punishment that would be absorded by fighting someone like Hatton or Cotto. Pretty sweet deal for FLoyd.
