I was thinking about this yesterday while I watched Mayweather vs Castillo 1 for the 3rd time. (Another post saying Mayweather got gifted prompted me to watch it AGAIN) I still had Mayweather winning just like the previous 2 times. I thought he built up too big of a lead in the first 4-5 rounds and definitely nicked 2-3 of the final 6.
For the record I think everybody should watch PBF vs JLC 1 with the sound off and ignoring Harold Lederman's stupid ass scorecard. He scored a round 9-9 when Castillo got a point deduction. Doesn't a 10 point must system mean somebody MUST score 10? So it should have been a 10-8 round for Floyd. Harold is a strawb. JLC did an awesome job of cutting off the ring though in that fight. Havn't seen anybody corner Floyd like that.

Anyway, back to the topic title. I think it's real simple..We will always score fights favourably for fighters that we are fans of simply because...They're our favourites!! Which means we enjoy watching them box and that we enjoy their style (Hence why they are our fave!) So when I'm seeing Mayweather doing his thing against Castillo, I'm scoring rounds for him because that's what I want to see. I like that style of fighting. When Pacquaio fans are scoring the fight in favour of the Pac Man against Marquez..it's because they LIKE his style and they like what they see! Hence, to them, Manny wins the round.
I guess it's the same for the judges..they score on what they personally like to see.

I hope i'm making sense here, it is obviously just a theory but it makes sense to me. How many Calzaghe fans had him winning against Hopkins yet how many Neutrals and Non-Calzaghe fans had Hopkins winning? Same with Ricky Hatton and Luis Collazo - As a neutral I thought Hatton nicked it by virtue of his early knockdown. Most thought he lost unless they were Hatton fans. There are lots of examples of this on these forums and everywhere.

It depends if the fight was being scored on a ten point must system.
I had Calzaghe Hopkins close,Hopkins ran out of gas in the later rounds,a split going either way was pretty much predictable. Joe throws a ton of punches, and even if theyre only hitting the arms, the activity rate will get you rounds
Im a bigger fan of Sugar Ray Leanord then I am of Marvin Hagler,I dont think Ray won that fight

I think WE would score a close round in favour to our prefered fighter also. Those rounds where its close to call, but it's not gonna be 10 each. We'll side with our fighter just because we're supporting him. Therefore iif there are 4 close to call rounds, you would have your fighter up by those 4 rounds, which other people may not agree with.

This obviously can't be the case with the judges unless they prefer a fighter....so you never know!

I can't say that I agree with this... THere have been many times where I have felt that my favored fighter lost a fight, but I agree that in a close fight with close rounds that it almost always goes to the fan's favorite fighter. Yet judges sometimes are like that as well I still ahve no idea how fights like HOpkins-Wright and JMM-Barrera had just lopsided scores. Both fights were extremely close and I felt in both cases Hopkins and JMM won by a hair.

Obviously i'm not saying you'd score every round to your favourite fighter! What i'm getting at is exactly what you say. Close fights with close rounds you will always score for your fave fighter because his style of fighting is more aesthetically pleasing to you. Therefore giving him the nod. If you're scoring rounds where your fave fighter lost by a mile for him then obviously that's just being far too biased.

the thing you have to watch the most IMO is paying more attention to what your favorite fighter is doing then what the opponent is doing. They may each land a punch in an exchange but you pay more attention to what the guy you're rooting for did.

Lampley is good at this. He even sees punches land that don't land at all. For some reason lately I've had an urge to walk up to somebody on the street and scream "big right hand"

Looking at a fight from a trainers point of view is much different to watching as a fan. There's more cause for concern, you know the judges could see it either way. As a fan you'll score close rounds in your mans favour.

Haha so true about Lampley. He calls a 'Great Left Hook by Mayweather!!!! Rocked De Marcus Corley!' in that fight that never actually existed. I remember when I first heard him say it went back because I thought i'd missed it but nope, the punch actually didn't exist lol. Big right hand is definitely his favourite.

To an extent you are right, we do like to favor our favorite in a fight and try to look at everything they do in a bout as if it is helping them win it. I like to see a fight a few times myself before making a definite answer. It always seems you catch something the second or third time around you missed before.

Ive often conjured up a system when watching my favourite boxers hatton/mosley/calzaghe/maccarinelli/cook etc whereby i score it on 2 different counts the 1st being what i hope the eventual decision will be and the 2nd what i expect.

Its so hard to accurately analyse 2 fighters when you have certain affections for said fighter.

I had sugar shane beating cotto 116-112 when i originally watched it and only now after seeing it again do i realise the correct decision was for cotto.
