    Default Joey Gilbert

Does anyone have any news on him? Since he got a drugs ban last September I've not been able to find any information on him.

It's rare that anyone gets banned for more than a year for drug offenses so I'm presuming he'll be back soon?

I thought out of the all the Contenders he was showing the most potential.

He'd looked great since leaving the Contender and hits hard enough to hurt anybody.

Case in point Duddy laboured to a points win this weekend against a fighter who Gilbert took out in a round last year.

I'd like to see him come back, I really think he could make some noise and is certainly as good a prospect as Duddy and Ronald Hearns imo and could beat either one.

Last I heard of him was this little bit I read on Sherdog the other day.

Popular Nevadan Joey Gilbert, one of the original stars of the boxing reality television series "The Contender," has been working hard with UFC welterweight contender Diego Sanchez (Pictures) on his pugilistic endeavors. Gilbert's work ethic and drills paid dividends as Sanchez looked sensational in victory against Luigi Fioravanti (Pictures) on Spike TV's "The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale" last Sunday. Following the event, Gilbert told to Sherdog.com that he is thinking about taking up MMA professionally and said that he might make his pro debut in a year, maybe year and a half. …

If I remember clearly, he got his result for a positive meth test overturned but still had a steroid test on his record. I don't think he is under any sort of a ban just fighting that right now. He both promoted and fought out of Nevada, I'm sure Nevada banned him but he staged his shows in Stateline, Nevada which is the town up by Tahoe here in California that is split in half by the state border. I'm sure he could move camp if he wished just down the road as he's extremely popular in that area but hasn't done so yet. If Nevada banned him my guess is it's not an indefinite suspension as that's unprecedented as far as I know and I know other states don't have to honor these bans. I think it's just a matter of him not wanting to fight without clearing his name. I read an article about him a few months ago probably but can't find it.

He has a fanbase though, I hope he does turn to MMA that would be interesting to see someone in what I guess you would call a prime turn to MMA and obviously he has done a little training. He would probably be the perfect guy or Cintron but Cintron still makes more money beating up on David Estrada I'm sure then he would fighting George St. Pierre as sad as that is.

Yeah physically I reckon Gilbert would do very well in MMA, he's built like a brick shit house and could knock any MMA fighter out in a stand up trade I reckon.

Have to see how good a wrestler he is and whether he's any good on the ground but I'd say he'd have as much chance as any boxer to do well.

Well I think in MMA to be successful you either have to have one really good base, or be good in combinations of boxing, kickboxing, muy thai, wrestling or bjj. If you're really good at something and just round yourself out you have a great chance to be successful and at least build a winning record. A Gilbert is as good of a boxer as you are going to find in MMA actually I thought he had some real potential early after the Contender but inactivity killed that. He's certainly enough of an athlete to round out his wrestling and maybe make an impact in MMA.
