CANADIAN AMATEUR BOXING
So the subject of this thread is called "The Decline in Canadian Boxing"
based on only one Canadian Boxer being at the 2008 Olympics.
The suggestion that Canada would have to bring in Foreign trained
coaches is not acceptable.
Throughout the long period of Canadian amateur boxing pre 1969 and
post 1968, there have been strong periods and weak periods.
There are a number of areas that could be used to judge the
qualification of of our amateur boxers to step-up to the plate
and qualify for the Olympics. But, to resort to importing
foreign coaches to correct any faults or weaknesses should
not be necessary.
It is not necessary to have a Russian or a Cuban elite-coach,
with a wall of coaching certificates, waltzing into
Canada with a blueprint to create the perfect fighter.
There are no perfect fighters and their never will be.
There are a number of key component necessary for boxers;
. skills and experience
The skill component begins at ground level when the would be boxers
are in their early years in the game. And, you can bet that some
high payed imported coach will not be at ground zero teaching basic
ring skills to novice boxers from PEI to Vancouver Island and Newfoundland.
The next component is experience that is gained by active competition
with regular club cards and monitored tournaments.
After each fight by even the novice boxers, there needs to be an analysis
of the results - positive and negative. Also, an attempt should be made
by the boxer to do a self-evaluation and to draft a potential learning plan.
At the novice and club level, the objective is to improve as time goes by.
Therefore the critical period for teaching elite boxers is and must be
at the ground level and each boxers first ten fights. The important
focus must be on the learning of the ring skills not on the win-loss record.
There is much to say on this topic, but selling-out or giving up is a
non-starter, but thinking, breathing and executing excellence at ground zero
is the right path and the only path, and the long-term path for real
elite senior open boxers that have the skills & the experience to
challenge the best of the best

t in International Tournaments.
