Thread: tyson against the heavyweight legends

let me know how you think a prime mike tyson wouldve fared against the likes of louis, marciano, ali etc.

Tyson was a beast and is one of the heavyweight legends himself. I think he fares well against the majority of fighters head to head but think it's something that could go either way on any given night with great fighters of this caliber.

mike tyson would beat all except ali. marciano was to slow to keep up with tyson same goes for louis, frazier would get kod in the first round foreman wouldnt land anything cleanly so thats it mike would beat all except ali.

Foreman style wise is a mare for Tyson and he would KO Mike. Ali and Holmes would out point him.

Prime for prime that is.

I think Prime Mike would do well against a lot of HW legends. I think he has too much firepower for the likes of guys like Marciano and Louis, who really weren't HWs to begin with. I think he would probably knock Frazier and Ken Norton out. I'd give him a good shot against Foreman.

But that being said, I think the durable, fast jabbing and quick moving guys like Ali and Holmes would beat him.

i think that tyson wouldve been too fast and powerful for all but ali. sonny liston wouldve been a great fight though, two ferocious tough guys going at it. again i think tyson would be too fast.

Marciano and Louis would most likely be cruisers in Tysons era,Ali would have embarrassed him,Foreman and Holmes would have kept him away until they got the big shot,Frazier would have been interesting,because it would be mirror images going against each other

This is an interview with Holmes right after Tyson smashed him through the canvas, he says Mike was very hard to hit, was very sharp and he couldnt live with him on the inside, Mike would have done the same to a prime Holmes, it might have taken a couple of rounds more but it would end with Holmes on his back.

Mike was something special, Ok Holmes wasnt in his prime but he was even further removed from that when he pushed Holyfield alll the way and beat Mercer who should have got the decision against Lewis.

No one else would ever have done that to Holmes at any point in his career

I like Tyson to beat some of the smaller greats like Marciano, Dempsey, Frazier, maybe Louis. Louis's chin wasn't the best, although it should be noted that they used smaller gloves then.

Foreman would probably beat Tyson, similar in ways to Frazier, but Tyson was a much faster starter than Frazier, with a better variety of punches. So Tyson would be a live underdog, while I can't envision any Frazier beating Foreman. The uppercut is key against shorter swarmers though, and it was a punch you could get Tyson with. That was the key punch against Frazier, and I think it'd be the key punch against Tyson.

I'd make Holmes the slight favorite against Tyson. An interesting thing was mentioned on ESPN Classic Ringside (I think), on Tyson. Teddy Atlas was saying that Cus would tell Tyson what he would do if he were to fight Holmes. You could time him with a right hand. Snipes and Shavers badly hurt him with hit (some refs would've stopped those bouts), Weaver hurt him with it, Spoon did as well. When Tyson fought an aging Holmes, it was this punch that was the beginning of the end for Holmes. Obviously a younger Holmes is tougher to time than a 1988 Holmes, but other guys did it and hurt him and they weren't the finishers that Tyson was.

I can see both sides about Holyfield. Some believe that Holyfield would always own Tyson, had the right style for Tyson, was too much mentally and physically, etc... Maybe. Then again, a younger Tyson attacked the body more. I've seen Holyfield doubled over or hurt quite a few times from good body shots. Also, the older Holyfield who beat an Tyson was smarter and stronger than the younger Holyfield. Holyfield said he learned to control his aggression, especially after getting stopped by Bowe. He clinched Tyson a lot, and was physically stronger. Holyfield was supposedly shot, but in actuality he had adapted well as he got older. Would a younger Holyfield clinch Tyson and outwrestle him, or get drawn into warfare as he so often did?

I think Ali outboxes Tyson and wins a UD, maybe stops him late. Tyson's dangerous in the early going, maybe he can take advantage of Ali's flaws and suspectibility to a left hook and stop him, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Your kidding right,Holmes had been retired for a year and a half when he fought Tyson

18 months is fuck all, some active fighters have 18 months between fights, look at De La Hoya.

Tyson wiped his ass with Holmes and Holmes basicly admitted Mike was alot better than he had thought, he also said Mike was the shrpest puncher he had fought and that includes some top boys
He also admitted he was very hard to hit

Man what are you talking about ross he was 38 years old dude and did not fight for over a year not to mention had 14 days to train dude. Sorry you sound like a nut hugger if you think there fight would determine how a prime Holmes would do if he was fighting and the sad part is that Tysons best win is over old Holmes. Tyson has to be the most overrated Heavyweight of all time he has a weak resume and was in the weakest era of boxing since Rocky. He never beat a elite fighter he always lost the big fights so i do not get were Tyson was unstopable maybe if he was fighting old men or complete losers. His lose to Douglas was priceless and his lose to Evander Holyfeild was even better let me just say i a Holyfeild fan because Holyfeild truly was the real deal and he showed it by beating people. Unlike Tyson who fought nobodies and then lost to the real champions and for you say he was not prime Holyfeild had bad hart condtion and was older still won.
