    Default Ricardo Mayorga

Was anyone else saddened to see 'El Matador' get laid out by that brutal left hand on Saturday night?

I thought he had fought gamely against a faded Mosely, and made it a much closer fight than I had anticipated. The combination that brought about the first knockdown should have been enough for him but, as he always does, he got up and took more than he should have. That last left was brutal and Mayorga didn't even have his hands at his jaw to protect himself from it.

I've seen every fight he's had since the first Vernon Forrest fight and he has given me value for money every single time.

Don King has thrown him to the wolves, and given him the short money in just about every fight he's had. I hope he's invested a bit of his cash and can walk away from the game contented - he doesn't strike me as the type though. I want to see him retire before these brutal shots start catching up with him, that's if they haven't started too already - it's clear his chin isn't as effective as it once was.

On another note, how good could Mayorga have been if he actually learnt how to box a little bit and was as dedicated in training as some of his contemporaries? He has good power, great fighting heart and, as we saw Saturday, is deceptively quick - yet his defence is a shambles, his jab is a rumour and his footwork is terrible.

Mayorga strikes me as someone who had incredible talent but never made the most of those gifts.

yeah i totally agree with that, mayorga became a world champ on raw toughness each time and that speaks for itself, and had he learnt to be more technical things could have been very different for him. saying that, i think hes got a brilliant fighting spirit and entertains everytime. he was very unlucky against mosley on saturday night.

I didnt like to see that happen, he had fought so hard and been so much more active than Shane. And then to get sparked like he did. I feel sorry for him.

I don't think you can say King has thrown him to the wolves, most fighters would be happy to get shots at Vernon Forrest, Tito Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosely in their careers.

Mayorga always gives good value I agree and I'm glad he gets the big fights. Throw in Spinks and Vargas as well and he's had a decent list of opposition found for him.

Not sure if Judah is still with King but he also has had many top level opponents well beyond his deserving.

Often happens when a fighters exhausted in the latter rounds and takes a big whack,by then your punch resistance is pretty much gone unless your super fit
Seen it happen to many fighters from ringside and those same shot's they've taken in the early rounds just ruin them in the latter rounds.

I try and respect every fighter I can, but when a fighter fades in the late rounds of his fights I just think back to when he was talking beforehand.

Yeah, it was an awful way for him to lose. He deserved the win, it was just one of those freak things. Does anybody know what the judges' scorecards were?

To lose like that is unbelievable and you do have to feel sorry for the guy.

Yes as much of a dick as Mayorga can be, there is something sympathetic about him. Maybe it's just pity, or maybe it's just because he is entertaining. I like Mosley but there was a part of me rooting for El Matador even though he fights like a piss drunk hobo in a bar brawl.

Maybe if he laid off the cigs he might have that extra jolt of endurance he needs, in the latter rounds.

For the record Mayorga has made a shit load of money...

Much more money then other fighters who have been champs for some time.
Just think how much money these fights have gotten him:

    Forrest 2 times
    Spinks
    Trinidad
    De La Hoya
    Vargas
    SSM

I'm pretty sure Mayorgas not complaining.

    Going into the 12th:

    105-104 Mayorga, 105-104 Mosley, 107-102 Mosley.

Without a KD, the best Mayorga could've done was a draw.

Mayorga is NOT a "talented" fighter, why are people waxing nostalgic over this bum?
