    Default Biggest Hype Job

Who was the biggest hype job in boxing/mma/k-1 etc

Kimbo, Bob Sapp, Audley Harrison, Gerry Cooney, or someone else?

Well I was thinking about single fighters who were hyped up and ended up looking pathetic....like Michael Grant for example.

If you mean undeserved hype, I'd probably go with Cooney.

There are probably a lot of fighters that are hyped to the max in their own country, but not elsewhere. That's where a guy like Audley comes in.

Kelly Pavlik is one. Even though he made it to a world champion. He is pretty one dimensional and overhyped and got took to school by a 43 yr old who he was expected to KO with ease.

People were so far ahead of talking about him for the future, reigning the division for years etc... they forgot about what was standing in front, Bernard Hopkins.

I wouldn't call Pavlik a hype job...I'm talking about fighters who were basically handed wins and whenever they fought anyone anywhere near good kind of like Primo Carnera

Tough call on this one. I see your point, he doesn't exactly impress the hell out of me either, but he did beat some pretty good fighters. edit: basically what Lyle said

MMA I would have to go with Kimbo. They (elite xc) based their entire company around this fellow. He gets KO'd in 14 seconds by a guy a weightclass below his, and the company folds

As useless as Bob Sapp was, he does have 2 wins over K-1 legend Ernesto Hoost and a legendary MMA loss against PRIME Nogueira, so even though he was marketed and promoted to high heaven, he did have some good performances along the way.

Gerry Cooney suffers from that "white hope" double sword. When he was winning they overrated him, and when he loses they underrate him. Gerry was a REALLY good fighter IMO, dynamite left, good jab. One of the most brutal KOs of all time against legend Ken Norton. Look at the 3 guys he lost to. Holmes and Foreman, who IMO are both top 5 HWs of all time, and Michael Spinks, one of if not the greatest LHW of all time, and a guy who moved up to HW and handed Holmes his first 2 defeats. Yeah he looked bad but it was against STELLAR compedition.

Can't believe people are saying Cooney. There are at least 1000 boxers who were hyped more undeservably than he was.

Speaking as someone who was following the sport closely when this fight happened, I can tell you there was a huge amount of hype for Cooney and his power. People were talking about Holmes getting knocked back to Africa with this fight. But Holmes schooled and dismantled him with relative ease.

Anyways, Cooney was/is a decent guy who was not to blame for the hype. Full props to him for the exellent work he has done in support of retired boxers.

You out of your mind. I expected better from you. Reid was an over achiever in the sport of Boxing. Not to many people can become World Champs fighting with basically one eye.

You on the Saddo's top 10 posters pound for pound list. But p4p or not take your neg rep.

HAHA...wut a Dikk. What goes around comes around potna but Im going to rise above this night

Reid skilled no doubt, slick fawka. But He rode that lone olympian hype all over the networks and burned quick.Just never did it for me,Loved his smashing on usually tough Rupa, what he did to Waaaay past it Brown is what I hold against him.You KNOW that was a mirage. It got ugly at the end with him, getting knocked around by so-so types.
