Notwithstanding the three straight victories against three world champions that revitalized the career of Vic Darchinyan, conqueror Nonito Donaire Jr. believes he is still the man capable of again snatching the Australian’s three belts if given the chance of a return encounter. Interviewed by the daily morning Philippine radio show “Sports Chat” hosted by this writer Wednesday morning, Donaire said Darchinyan has become a bit slower and cautious in scoring an emphatic 11th round TKO win over Mexican superstar Jorge Arce last weekend at The Pond in Anaheim, California.
Before Arce, Darchinyan unified all three prestigious belts in the super flyweight division with spectacular wins over Russian Dimitri Kirilov and another Mexican superstar Cristian Mijares last year.
Donaire is responsible for Darchinyan’s only blemish of his fearsome fight record, a 5th round stoppage in their world flyweight encounter July of 2007 in Connecticut.
In the same interview Donaire reiterated his respect and appreciation of what former promoter Gary Shaw has done to his career that led to the Filipino-American’s reign as fyweight kingpin.
Donaire is currently up north in Baguio City preparing for former amateur foe Raul Martinez.
Donaire will stake his IBF belt against Martinez in a 12-round bout on March 22 at the famed Araneta Coliseum, site of the celebrated “Thrilla in Manila”.
