    Default Enzo Calzaghe

Well this guy was suppose to be brilliant , but personally i think very careful matchmaking has given some pretty average fighters the WBO titles.
Joe Calzaghe apart , this guy isnt a great trainer , just has good links to Frank Warren.
He has very limited sparring and a very small gym.

    your thoughts please guys.

He's a loon. Joe's a fantastic fighter, would have been whoever was training him, could've been Mr Bean as David Haye said.

Trainers show their class when things arent going to well, when the shit hits the fan he's clueless.

I was thinking the other day, maybe Enzo isn't as amazing as he's thought to be with the recent downfall of his biggest fighters: Macca, Pryce, Rees.

The fact that he was never a boxer himself is kinda odd but while Joe was around, no one questioned his training skills. Now that Joe's gone we can see it was more a case of Joe being good rather than Enzo, since his star boys have all flopped out recently and it seems hes crapping himself a bit with Frank warren on his arse after saturday night's shambles.

Guess you can only wait and see if Pryce, Macca and Rees come back again and are improved fighters because of Enzo's training.

Totally agree mate and his stable is simply falling apart, i agree that JC would have been that good regardless as he's simply gifted with natural ability that was in him from a kid and is a natural athlete.
Must be weird in that Gym with the main man now missing and i'd bet it's had a huge effect on Enzo's stable.
Is slapping your fighter round the face and screaming at him really what a man needs during rounds
Must be some serious bad blood between him and Warren too now after Joe won the court battle with FW.
He does seem clueless tactically and i thought Enzo Mac fought the wrong type of way on Saturday.

Thought that was very strange. Dunno if he looked tired or what but not 100% but that's not to take anything away from Ola. Who was very comfortable in their. He took his shots very well.

I was tipped that Ola would be in for a shot.

This isn't a matter of hindsight. Think to what Ola said before the fight about sparring in the US. He's been there for 8 years. He might be a small fish in their waters but it's got greater depth than the potential sparring over here.

I've never been a huge fan of Enzo but I wouldn't say he's down the drain yet; Rees was doing fairly ok when he got knocked out for the first time against a very talented opponent in the person of Kotelnik, Maca was a bit rusty against Ola but in general, I think that his problem is not that much the talent than his more than suspect jaw; no matter how your skills are good, if you can't take a single heavy punch on the button, you will feel backfire in a short future.
Every trainers has his darkest hours with his stable at a moment or another, I think we should wait a bit how Rees will bounce off his defeat first and if he can win another title before stating anything as if he's lousy or not, we tend to be a bit severe with boxers/trainers in such conditions (including myself) but from throwing Enzo to very good to rubbish would be perhaps a bit prematured at the moment (even though it could be revealed as true in the long run), we'll need another year or two to judge about it adequately.

To be fair, he was praised in the period that Calzaghe became a star, Maccrinelli was WBO champion, Gavin Rees was WBA champion (miracle/fix) and Bradly Pryce went on a win spree.

They were coming from a shed in the valleys. He probably deserved the praise.

And bear in mind almost every "top" trainer (especially in Britain it seems) goes through hot and cold periods.

I've always thought he looked poor in the corner with all that shouting bollocks. In a recent fight Dean Powell had to tell him to stop shouting and calmdown so they can give advice

And those Pikey tracksuit bottoms that seem almost tattoo'd to his legs...
You know the ones with the dodgy white stripe running the length of them.

He probably was the one who wore down Mac with the beating between rounds.

He was rated because guys like Pryce and Rees over achieved over the last couple of years, but it has hit the fan this last 12 months. He was never great at generating a game plan even with Joe, he had to adjust often during the fight as they never really studied the opponent.

Yep, I watched him slapping Mac and thought "any minute now the refs gonna jump in a nd rescue Mac before hes taken too much"

Just goes to show how good Joe was, he had no brilliant trainer or tactician to fall back on, certainly not on the level that Hopkins has, Joe worked everything out on the wing.

Was it in the Hopkins or Kessler fight that Powel said that to Enzo?

Think it was Hopkins. He wasn't just ranting and raving I remember him swigging the water bottle like an alchie, contantly shaking his head, Powell looked proper embarrassed
