Default MAB speaks out on Margarito "Plaster-gate"

An article by none other than Marco Antonio Barrera appeared in a local newspaper today. Apparently it was reprinted from ESPNdeportes.com. Although the article is in Spanish, I'll translate a couple of sections:

"The punishment for my fellow boxer, and I say this with great pain, should be at the international level, not only in the state of California."

    and

"It is now being said that in Mexico there will be support so that Margarito does not lose his relevance and continues fighting. I think the boxing commissions should join in supporting the punishment given in California, since in Mexico they are not as strict, and a serious incident could occur if his (Margarito's) wrongful deed is repeated."

A little rough around the edges (the translation), but that's the main jist. So basically, it's not only bitter Cotto fans that support Margarito getting suspended from boxing. Barrera's always been one of my favorite Mexican fighters (especially after he humiliated Naseem Hamed), and I've always viewed him as a classy, no-nonsense, dedicated fighter. If he says that about a fellow Mexican fighter, to me is carries some weight.

I read about this earlier, and I am happy that Marco knows the seriousness of what Margacheato and Capetillo did.

I do want to point out though, it's not just Cotto fans calling for this. On other forums, guys that were huge Margacheato fans, have turned their backs on him, and wish for his permanent ban from boxing.

I can also tell you that I have read many articles from the boxing media world, that is calling for the same thing. They all say that they were fans of that cheat, but feel that he needs to be punished severely, some even calling for criminal charges.

Here's a recap of what Marco said, in English.

No plaster, but Barrera's wraps were illegal too.

Forgive me if I don't put a lot of stock into what Roach says about anything. Hell... he looks slightly drunk anyway.

Barrera is a smart man and I'm glad he has spoken about it. What Margarito was involved with wasn't just cheating, it was an open willingness to inflict GBH upon other people. Boxing is a tough enough sport as it is, without shit like loading of the gloves. Margarito should not be able to fight in Mexico IMO, and people should certainly not pay to watch it. Margarito needs it made clear that what he did was criminal. Being able to fight in Mexico would be almost like no punishment has been dished out at all.

More pros, managers etc need to be open and make comments on this one, others sports where you are caught cheating don't impose a local ban, it's at least national or in most cases international. he's lucky no one has been mentioning possible criminal charges (or have they ?) As Miles says it's a hard enough sport without risking your life further to a cheat, I have deleted his fights from my hard drive now as they no longer impress me as i don't know if any are real results.

Well he went to law school right? Unless Margarito hires him as his lawyer I don't think he will defend him even if he's a Mexican.

I used to be a big Margarito fan and supporter. But that changed instantly when I heard the news before the Mosley fight. I can not and will not support someone who does such a vicious criminal act as loading your wraps with plaster. That is 100% inhumane. No human should even consider taking this lightly and the ones who do are only being bias at all costs. What is there to even argue? He needs banned for life. He already made out anyway by making millions. The least he should get is lifetime banishment.

Absolutely. I hate how a lot of these athletes play it safe and withhold comments that can really shake things up just for the sake of not breaking some sort of useless "code." Speak up, and call someone out if you need to.

No fighter should condone what Margarito did. It's unforgivable. Not unless he admits it, apologize, and fully accept the consequence. He should do time imo.

I don't want Margarito permanently banned, if anything I want his return to come around sooner!

Before I get flamed down the only reason I want this is out of curiosity. Is Tony as good as we thought? Can he beat Cotto again? Obviously every fight on his record is now questionable. I want him to come back so I can see if he can be as menacing with legal wraps! For all we know Maragrito could grind Cotto down into submission all over again, if they banned him forever we'd never know if that was possible!

Obviously from a moral standpoint I'm with everybody else, it's just out of my own curiosity that wants me to see him fight again!

    Once again Roach talking shit.

Roach & Team mab also had a minor falling out when Khan was over. I came to the conclusion he only pulls this crap to try and get in fighters heads. Someone should suckerpunch his bobblehead.
