    Default Easter Boxing Quiz:

I did a few of these in the past; hope you enjoy it:

1: Tommy Hearns had two popular nicknames, what were they?

2: What was the promotional name of Leonard/DuranIII? (e.g.the first fight was called The Brawl in Montreal)

3: Smokin' Joe Frazier also enjoyed singing (badly IMO), what was the name of his group?

4: What sport, (other than boxing), did Frank Bruno mention in his post fight interview following his loss to Mike Tyson in 1989?

5: Larry Holmes too, had two career nicknames, what were they?

6: What was Matthew Saad Muhammad's original name? (think)

7: Why did Muhammad Ali go to jail?

8a: What was the name of the group Frank Warren set up, to rival the British Boxing Board of Control sanctioning of legal professional boxing fights in the U.K.?

b: What was the main reason(s) for this coming about?

9: The Substitutes: Below is a list of fights, but the fighter on the right was not the original scheduled opponent, so, who was?

    'Sugar' Ray Leonard/Dick Ecklund
    Duke McKenzie/Juan Herrera
    Barry McGuigan/Stevie Cruz
Tim Whitherspoon/James 'Bonecrusher' Smith (the 1986 match)
    Mike Tyson/James 'Buster' Douglas
    Riddick Bowe/Jesse Ferguson

10: What were the names of the first Black fighters to win a world title*, in each of the classic eight weight divisions?

*This term is of course up for debate and there maybe several possible answers, in which case, I want the earliest claim.

The Answers are on the bottom of the second page

Good start, the first four are right; you are halfway there in the fifth, you got the Whitherspoon/Smith substitute opponent right, and you are almost there with McGuigan/Cruz.

Golf? That is just not cricket!

5:The Easton Assasian and ....The Peanut ?
Halfway there, but he had a nickname pre moving to Easton, that was fairly well known, at the time.

    6:Matthew Franklin...quite a trend at the time,changing names.

    7: Draft Evasion
Both answers are a little too obvious.... I get a bit more sneaky as my quiz's go along.

    8:No clue
    a. He felt he was not maximizing his potential lol.Dont know
    It is a tough question....

9:No idea in the Leonard,Duke McKenzie original opponents.McGuigan was set to fight Fernando Sosa.Witherspoon was set to fight...Tyson ?Bowe was set for Ray Mercer prior to 'Bribe gate'
McGuigan is right; brilliant call with bribegate Whitherspoon was due to rematch Tubbs, but Tubbs pulled out late, claiming a 'shoulder injury', and Smith (who was already on the bill, came in as a late sub, and blew Terrible Tim away in under a minute and a half.

Literal yes, and I only need the classic eight, but that said, I think you are right with Matlala; as for Strawweight I believe the answer is Zolani Petelo....

Excellent calls at 175, the only earlier claim I have seen is Sammy Langford (1911-13) after he beat Jack O'Brien, but that claim is not really proven.

Battling Siki was recognized even in the USA after he beat Carpentier; Georges having beaten Battling Levinsky in 1920 to 'unify' European and American world claims at 175lbs...

Another right call at Middleweight, again the only claim before that, that I know of was Sammy Langford (1907-11) who claimed the 'National Sporting Club' (British) Middleweight World Championship.

Lightweight is right with Joe Gans (1902)

Heavyweight is again right but with a *. That being that Peter Jackson was considered the 'Police Gazette' (The 'Ring' of its time) World Heavyweight Champion after beating Frank Slavin in 1892, losing the belt to James Jeffries in 1896.

Eddie Perkins at 140, I believe to also be correct.

No, I want his original name; Matt Franklin was his first name change; Matt Saad Muhammad his second name change......

No he had it is a pro, and used it into the 80s. I think when the Cooney fight happened he stopped using it, because naive people perhaps could of read something into it.
