Default With Both Now "Retired," Who Had The Better Legacy, Oscar or Floyd

Im gonna try to break this one down. Floyd is an unbelievably talented fighter, but his overall competition doesnt quite stack up to Oscars. Both men have 39 wins. Both were multi-division champions. Yes, Floyd has no loses and Oscar has 6. But I give Oscar a lot of credit for his loses because they were ALL to future HOFers and he did fight them. Floyd hasnt fought 6 Hall of Fame caliber fighters in his career. Oscar did lose those fights but my rational is to take them off his record and put them on a shelf for now.

Now, we have 39 wins per fighters so Im going to select their 15 biggest wins. Again, this is my opinion, but there is not much to argue here and these are in no particular order.

    Oscar De La Hoya:
    Julio Ceasar Chavez
    Pernell Whittaker
    Miguel Angel Gonzales
    Ike Quartey
    Fernando Vargas
    Jorge Paez
    John John Molina
    Rafael Ruelas
    Arturo Gatti
    Genaro Hernandez
    Hector Camacho
    Jesse James Lieja
    Oba Carr
    Ricardo Mayorga
    Javier Castillejo

    Floyd Mayweather
    :
    Oscar De La Hoya
    Ricky Hatton
    Diego Corrales
    Jose Luis Castillo
    Zab Judah
    Arturo Gatti
    Carlos Manuel Baldomir
    Angel Manfredy
    Sharmba Mitchell
    Jesus Chavez
    Carlos Hernandez
    Phillip N'dou
    Victoriano Sosa
    DeMarcus Corley
    Genaro Hernandez

Now, going back to Oscars loses. 3 of them are current champions and all top p4p fighters in the world (Hopkins, Pac, Mosley). The two others are Felix Trinidad and Floyd himself.

Floyd has never lost a fight. Is that a testement to his greatness or lack of worthy opposition? You be the judge. Both guys are undeniably among the best of recent times and it will be interesting to see how history remembers them.

First off, I congratulate you on a very good post. In my opinion Oscar had the better legacy, though they both had good opposition, Oscar's was just a bit better. Furthermore, Oscar, took on all comers while, Mayweather dodged some good fights. For example; Cotto, Margarito, Mosely. De La Hoya, though he lost some of his fights, never avoided the tough opposition. In my opinion to be a great fighter, you have to take on the best, win or, and Mayweather retired before fully fullfilling his legacy.

Shockingly, I'm gonna go with Floyd, although it is tight. I just feel that the 3 most impressive wins Oscar has on that list (JCC, Pernell & Quartey) were all well past their best, and I thought he lost 2 of those (although this evens up with the Trinidad fight & the 2nd Mosley fight).

I'm also taking the manner of performance & how far out of their comfort zone they were. IMO Mayweather isn't and never has been a 147 fighter, whereas ODLH was a natural welter who was great at getting down early in his career, and eventually grew into a natural LMW.

Floyd on the other hand was a natural 130lb fighter, who grew into being a natural 140lber and climbed higher to go after De La Hoya. I was also more impressed by the manner of his victories, and in truth the only guy he ever had any difficulty with was Castillo, and he had him figured out in their rematch. One thing that irritated me with Oscar was that he never gave rematches to guys who he got a lucky decision over, only where it suited him. Should have fought Trinidad at 154 though.

In response to Jaz's post, I honestly don't find it shocking, because quite frankly Floyd Mayweather Jr is in with a shout of being the greatest of all time, and if he stays retired he will have quit whilst his powers were at their zenith and will not suffer the type of ignominious defeat that ODLH had against Pacquiao.

If he does come back, I hope it's against a very top class fighter, and he wins with the aplomb of his best wins, otherwise it could marr his legacy, which at present is exceptional.

Oscar is in Floyds list but Floyd is not in Oscars list? Speaks for itself really

Oscars legacy overshadows Floyds in my opinion, too many great names.

The list is of the fighters they have beaten. As Floyd beat Oscar he gets him on the list.

Genaro Hernandez should be on Floyd's list as well btw.

To me for now Oscar has the better legacy in and out of the ring. Although PBF is right there, one major win for Floyd and he takes it especially if it's JMM or PAC.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.

Good call. I kept to 15 but I could replace Augustus or Sosa with Genaro. I kept it to 15 wins a piece though.

I have to go with Oscar....god I never thought I'd say that .Going on longevity, overall competition, facing adversity and division spans. He had some ups and downs, but was willing to go at the top for the entirity of career.Floyd Imo has the better skills clearly but might not have given himself the chance to realize his full potential & greatness.

BoomBoom, why are you hating on Troy Dorsey like that lol . Side note....Genaro DEFINATLY belongs on Floyds list,Imo.

Not really sure how you work that part out about the dodging, Floyd Mayweather did offer Shane Mosley a fight at one point. But declined it and made an excuse i can't remember what it was. But they were always mostly at different weightclasses.

Antonio Margarito was a nobody when he offered Floyd Mayweather a fight, and secondly since Antonio Margarito has been found out as a cheater. Does it really matter now ?

The only one i agree on is Miguel Cotto, but has Miguel Cotto ever really called out Floyd Mayweather ? and lastly to the topic creator's orignal question, yes ODLH clearly has the better resume at this moment in time.

I agree with everything you wrote. Floyds lack of risk taking deprived him of some big wins... I dont know how i forgot Dorsey, thats it Pernells getting bumped off....or maybe Camacho ...yeah ill go with him

Well, I am definitely going with PBF because he didn't really "avoid" anyone until welterweight. And that is the weight class that DLH started avoiding people also. People forget that Margarito called out DLH first and the most. DLH refused. Winky Wright called out DLH so much he got hoarse. PBF gets the most criticism for not taking on certain fighters but all fighters pick, choose, and go around other fighters. Both PBF and DLH got called out and never took on the big risk less reward. PBF beat the best at 130, 135, and 140. PBF didn't really become a business first fighter until he started taking on bigger guys. PBF is no welterweight, lest we forget. But his style and talent allow for him to take on bigger guys. Hell, DLH got beat by a much smaller fighter. To give DLH credit he has fought a who's who list. BUT, he lost just about every big fight he was ever in. Lets be real, even a couple of his big victories are questionable. The top fighters in DLH's career that he fought are Trinidad, Mosley, Hopkins, Pacquiao, Whitaker, and Mayweather. In those fights he is 1-6. If this was a post about heart then DLH wins but legacy isn't just about who you fought its about wins and losses against who you fought.
