    MAYOL VS CALDERON IS ON!

    By Salven L. Lagumbay

    Sun, 26 Apr 2009

According to Fightnews, unbeaten two-time world champion Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico will be defending his WBO 108-lb title at the Madison Square Garden on Saturday, June 13 against LA-based Filipino Rodel Mayol.

The fight is set on the undercard of the big world championship welterweight clash between Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey.

Calderon will be making the fourth defense of the 108-pound title. He said: “It has always been my dream to fight at Madison Square Garden in New York and to do it the night before the National Puerto Rican Parade, makes it even more exciting for me. It will be a night to remember."

Mayol, who trains at Freddie Roach's Wild Card Gym, was once considered as the country's brightest hope for a world title, but failed twice in his previous world title attempts.

and he's gonna fail for the 3rd time when he fights Calderon lol, IMO no one at that weight can beat Calderon, only one who i'd give a slight chance to is Viloria, and honestly he gets a bit too wreckless and Calderon would out box him easily

I have to admit that I have not seen Mayol fighting, but I have seen the Iron Boy a lot since the beginning of his career. He is definitely one of the most skillful boxers today, and Mayol will have to fight hard if he wants to win.

We're kinda opposite here . I've seen 4 Mayol fights, but I've never seen Calderon in action. I heard he's got superb boxing skills, but he's not exactly a KO artist. Mayol is difinitely the underdog, but I'm giving him the punchers chance.

When my boy Calderon beat the bigger, heavier puncher Hugo Cazares twice... he made a believer out of me. I haven't seen Mayol fight either, but I have full confidence in the "Iron Boy."

Bit disappointed with this match-up to be honest! Calderon looked all set to face Canchilla before Segura drilled him. So I was hoping Calderon would extend an invite to Segura...

But Moyal is not the sort of opponent that is going to strengthen Calderon's legacy or HOF aspirations.

Calderon doesn't score to many KO's but I see one here!!!

    PR vs. RP

Puerto Rico vs. Republic of the Philippines

Mayol has a questionable stamina... I don't know if he can keep up with the elusive and always on the move Calderon...

Mayol actually has pretty good skills. I thought he would make some noise when he was coming up. But I don't think he recovered from that brutal knock out against Solis. Than Hernandez stopped him after that. In a fight in which they said Mayol showed straight cowardice. How the fukk he got a title shot I have no idea. I wonder who's dog he's holding hostage? Anyway, Calderon is slowing down. If Mayol fights with motivation and a sense of purpose I can see him getting the win. I need to look at the odds on this fight. I just might put some down on Mayol if the odds are to my liking. I'm expecting Mayol to be a pretty big underdog.

I guess Mayol got this shot coz he's a TopRank boxer and this is a TopRank boxing card...

Mayol is expected to lose this one, a heavy underdog...

After Calderon's done toying with Mayol I hope he targets Viloria, Segura or Sosa... a fight with Gonzalez would be outstanding, as would fights with Garcia, Nietes or Sithsamerchai if they moved up. Calderon has to only fight big fights from here if he wants to be a great!

"IF he wants to be a great"? WTF are you talking about? He's already in the top 10 p4p list. He went up in weight and beat the champ at the higher division (Hugo Cazares), not once, but twice. He's undefeated, and has not come close to being defeated. He's considered one of the better pure boxers in the world today. What do you mean IF he wants to be a great? ?

I'm saying that he ain't a great yet & his entrance into the HOF isn't assured yet!

He never fought the top guy at 105, he always fought opponents once they had already been beaten... Cardenas, Leyva, Reyes, Bustos. Never fought Kyowa.

He has come close to being defeated: the 1st Cazares fight, Ronald Barrera!

Does anyone think he could have beaten Lopez? Don't think so!

Don't get me wrong Calderon along with Darchinyan are my top fav fighters right now, but his record is nothing outstanding! Cazares is the only fighter even remotely close to great that he has fought.

Calderon is the best boxer in the business right now, he is a pound for pound fighter but his record is not HOF stuff!

Great fighters are defind by the opposition they face & how they faired. Cazares is Calderons best victory but the 1st was close (people on here thought Cazares won) & he was put down & the second ended prematurely...

Calderon is very good but he needs to do more if he wants to be an all time great!

he's beaten everyone put ahead of him CLEARLY and also he's no spring chicken, the man is 34 yrs old, something you don't see too often at that weight, there are rumors that he might move up in weight by the end of the year

Not clearly (see my previous post Barrera & Cazares), never fought the top guy at 105. Cazares is the best he's done & I'm sorry but one opponent is not good enough for HOF imo
