Default Best Boxing Upsets Of The Past Twenty Years

Number 6: Marco Antonio Barerra puts on a clinic against undefeated Naseem Hamed in 2001. Result: 115-112, 116-111 and 115-112, all for Barerra.

Barerra came in to this fight as a "washed-up" 27-year-old who was recently beated badly by Junior Jones twice via a fifth round retirement and decisive UD 12 loss. He shot back up on the boxing scene after giving the undefeated Erik Morales all he could handle in 2000, even knocking the champion do... Full Boxing Article here...

Would like to see Douglas given a bit more credit for the win against Tyson then he actually gets there, I'd also say that Pacquiao-Barrera deserves to be in there as a major upset as does Hatton-Tszyu

Hold up.. no disrespect David Shipman but you've totally contradicted yourself.

You've started with - Barrera came into the fight (the Naz fight) as a "washed up" 27-year-old who was recently badly beaten by Junior Jones. Then you're saying he (Barrera) shot back against Morales giving him all he could handle.

err.. so CLEARLY Barrera was in great form going into the Naz fight.

Barrera beating Naz wasn't an upset to many either

I picked MAB to win the Naz fight - go and look on the old Prince naseem forum for the evidence

I also had Hopkins an easy winner over Trinidad and had the Tarver fight as a pick 'em .

Agree with the others though - nice

Anyone not think it was an upset in the way that hatton made it to the second round the other week

Mosley beating Margarito was a an upset especially after his sub-par performance against Mayorga. Not many people (including myself and im a massive Mosley fan) had him down to win after what Margarito did to Cotto and to win in such a dominant fashion and with a KO not many predicted it!

Good stuff. Those are huge names, mega fight upsets. Not to sound like an obnoxious twat but I picked 4 of em .Hopkins over Tito and Tarver, Barrera over the princess and Holyfield to beat up Tyson.....and didn't Mike get dropped in the 6th but finish on his feet in the fateful 11th,though KTFO.

Nothing tops Douglas beating Tyson in my book. I would also say Baldomir beating Judah was a huge upset no one ever saw that coming. Another biggie was Vernon Forrest beating Shane Mosley when he was considered invincible. Foreman Moorer has to make the list.

What an obnoxious twat. I picked three of the upsets listed.

Number 1 upset of all time is most definetely Tyson being KO'd by Douglas.

It was not like Douglas threw a lucky punch and that was it. He was connecting with that piercing jab, combinations, uppercuts, etc. He fought well. Not so sure about the 14 seconds he got when he went down though.

The two I liked are because I picked them:

Watson over Benn (just in the time frame), it still amazes me Benn came in a huge favourite; anyone who had seen Watson/Lee could see what was going to happen!

The best bet I ever had was putting a tenner on the 24/1 shot Holyfield to beat Tyson...

The biggest in the last 20 years is Tyson/Douglas; then Tyson/HolyfieldI and I would say Forrest/MosleyI sneaks bronze.

Like Boxerharvey, I would put Mosley-Margarito above some that have been mentioned. Their careers were going in the opposite direction coming into the fight.

Margarito was an ultra strong 1/5 shot (if i remember right). Without having the facts, some of the fights mentioned would have been tighter than that in the betting.

Douglas over Tyson is the biggest upset in boxing history IMO!

    Barkley over Hearns was huge!

Tarver knocking out Roy Jones jr in 2 rounds...never expected that!

Phillips over Tszyu was a shock, Tszyu nearly had Phillips outta there in 3.

Quintana over Williams...in hindsight WTF happened?
