WBC Diamond Championship

Jose Sulaiman, President of the WBC, is announcing the institution of a new WBC green and gold belt to be called WBC Diamond Championship, a honorary championship exclusively for fights between elite boxers.
This new implementation has been voted in favor by the WBC Board of Governors based in an absolute unanimous voting, and will actively participate to keep boxing as great as ever with new and exciting formats for the fans.
Boxing is changing; it has a heavy influence from television and promoters are looking for highly interesting and passionate battles for the benefit of the boxing fans of the world.
The WBC believes that this belt will play a very important role in modern boxing, as the fights between elite boxers called “catch weight” fights, have not been a complete success, due to the fact that the advertising is only done for fans to know who is the best between two fighters and nothing is at stake.
The WBC will propose that the promotion renders homage to the two greatest fighters of such division, as they will be showcased in the belt.
This WBC Diamond Belt is being manufactured using the same design as the traditional belt but the materials will include 18 karat gold fusion, 598 diamonds, 196 emeralds, 6 rubies and 150 swarowsky semi-precious stones.

Jose Sulaiman, finished stating that he is very proud of the step taken by the WBC, as it will be in benefit of improving boxing, in benefit of the boxing fans of the world, of promoters, television and everybody involved in the sport of boxing.

The fact that this is the first time that this belt is being staked at a cathcweight fight makes it "Historical". Great considering that the WBO Welter belt is also at stake

So is this going to be like a vacant title fight? or does this mean that if Cotto loses, he loses his WBC 147 belt. Would the winner have to defend this 'diamond' belt?

This is all just silly to me. Couldn't they just come up with a a pretty trophy on the side, maybe a Happy Meal instead?

At least they ain't charging any sanctioning fees for this sh*t, Cotto/ Pacquiao is a fight between 2 elite fighters!

Why do the sanctioning bodies think fans are stupid? I was excited when I 1st heard this fight was on, it didn't need paper titles & baubles to make it better. Its a damn good fight & thats what matters to me. I just want to see the top guys fighting each other!

The WBC is proud to announce the new "Hefty Sanctioning Fee Belt"

This belt is for bouts the WBC can't call official title bouts, but they feel that the public at large demand a huge sanctioning fee.

Jose Suliman is once again proud as a "Humble servant of boxing" to give the fans what they want.

Any guesses on the sanctioning fee?

I heard that this fight is actually going to be for the "interim" diamond belt.

When either fighter hits on hard times they can sell the diamonds.

The Lonsdale belt is the most beautiful belt.

This belt is one of the many reasons why Boxing struggles vs MMA and lose credibility every year when some peoples are trying to build it back.

I personally think that the Ring belt is the best looking and most meaningful. What boxing needs is someone with a shit load of cash to buy out all the governing bodies and melt all the "world championships" down, build a new fort knox and store all the gold there. Then they need to have a little tournament in each division like the one in the SMW divison now and get a new champ that will then be undisputed and "the man"!
