Default A young Erik Morales on ESPN Classic tonight

21 year old Morales, his first defense, his first fight after beating Zaragoza for the title. Against John Lowey. I don't remember this so I must have missed it. I don't know how great a fight it was but its better than watching another Ali fight. Its on now.

isn't that the fight that the guy runs at him in the opening round while Morales' back is still turned?

    its over by now

and yeah Lowey charged him and threw a left hook just as he was getting up from his prefight prayer. He looked kind of out of sorts for a minute or so after that

yea i remember that fight, the guy was a bit dirty but was pretty damn tough, took loads of hard flush shots and if i remember correctly the fight was stopped with him never really going down, but a pretty ugly fight at that

Morales was such a great fighter. The only thing negative i could say about him is that too many times he fought with machismo and not his brain. Technically, he was a superb fighter. But he could too easily be lulled into a brawl. You can argue that is part of what made him great and exciting. But i just felt he could have prolonged his career if he fought with controlled aggression. Having said all that...he was an ultimate warrior and one of Mexico's all time great champs.

    I remember that.
He probably figured it was the only chance he had of winning.

i fully agree, i've always felt that he was technically superior to Barrera as he displayed in the rematch (i felt Morales won the 2nd fight, and the 1st was about even) but he had the whole "you hurt me i'm gonna hurt you" mentality, it made his fights with Barrera, Chavez, Hernandez, Pacquiao, Kelly, and others classics but it also made him pretty much shot by the age of 30
