I don't think Hopkins had anything to do with his current situation. After the Rubio fight, he got a cortisone shot on his knuckle. A staph infection developed at the needle sight. He got treatment, it never helped so he found himself sidelined. He got into trouble during this down time but it was not the first time. he had episodes long before Hopkins of getting drunk, being a dick and once for beating up a cop etc.
The infection lead to two operations over the summer due to just not going away. It was hard to cure because of it being located in one of his extremities. They thought they finally had the infection beat. Setting up fights and the forced cancellations caused them to get desperate. he got aggressive treatment in September and he ended up almost dying from shock because of it and ended up spending 5 days in the hospital.
Although they think the infection is gone now, his lack of the use of his hand, the scar tissue buildup etc is preventing his from making a fist. That will come back in time. His situation is just having an injury that just took much longer to fix than they ever anticipated. It has lead to a long layoff but I bet we will see him back in the ring no later than January/February with a ton of rust to work off.
