Thread: Is it bad for RIgondeaux to have Roach as a trainer?

At first I thought it was a great matchup, but more and more I begin to think that Rigondeaux isn't getting as many fights as quickly as he should, and I can't help but feel its because Roach trains so many high profile fighters and doesn't have the time to properly and specifically train Guillermo. I mean he went pro like 8 months ago, and he's had 3 fights so far...

I don't think it really makes a difference. The main thing with these defecters is making sure thier new free lifestyle in the states doesn't cause thier boxing career to suffer. Rigondeaux is no spring chicken and just like gamboa he is who he is . Roach or nobody else is really going to teach him much of anything new that he will actually use in the ring.

Hmm, is this is a promotional problem though?

On the other point, fair enough, Roach does train a fair amount of fighters

Rigondeaux has all the technical skill he needs, having Roach in his corner will help his popularity, because Roach himself is a celebrity at this point. A few pointers here and there, are all he really needs as far as skills go. It's not like Craig McEwan who really has a lot to learn skill wise. Rigondeaux is already there.

I am not completely sold on Rigondeaux having all the skills he needs. He certainly has the tools. I think anyone could tell you can't throw him in with a world class opponent, because he hasn't had to dig or face adversity. Gamboa/JMLopez has faced adversity (Jiminez, Ramirez.. early) but didn't really need to dig.

And from a promotional standpoint it's going to be anything but easy to get this guy where he wants to be in a couple years. 3 fights in 8 months is ok at this point. These fights are only there to build confidence. Establish a record, maintain, & train. (Nothing like what Gamboa is doing) Freddie will get him straight.

I don't know what other skill you expect from him? Can you explain that please.

Mayweather didn't face real adversity until he faced Castillo, and he was already the unified 130 pound before then. Roy didn't face any adveristy until he fought MOntell Griffin at 175(at which point he had already won titles at 3 weight classes).

My problem with him being with ROach is 1. Roach wasn't even in his corner for one of his fights which didn't really matter, but still Roach would choose Pacquiao and Khan over him everytime until they get derailed, Khan is too popular and is a lot yougner than Rigondeaux, while Pacquiao is Pacquiao. I think training wise Roach is an excellent trainer, but I think Rigondeaux should be getting in the ring a lot more, I mean he's been hit like twice cleanly as a proffesional in 3 fights, he has hardly at to do anything in all three of his fights.

I think Rigondeaux would beat JML or Gamboa relatively easily considering how good they are. After watching Lopez's second last fight I think Rigondeaux movement and counter punching would completely befuddle him, and Gamboa makes way too many mistakes and a guy the same speed as him with Guillermo's accurate punching would eat him alive.

It isn't easy getting Rigondeaux the fights he needs. He's only had three of them so far, and just because he's world class already that doesn't mean he can generate the kind of money yet that would secure a solid opponent. It's like fighting a huge name fighter with big time skill, but getting minimum reward. If you are going to fight someone that good you want to get paid. One of his opponents pulled out because he googled Rigondeaux and found out who he was!

It can never be bad to have Roach by your side; The guy has no family and is 100% devoted to boxing and we've seen that he's performing with any kind of different fighters to get the best out of them. If he doesn't have enough fight, it is a promoting matter, the trainer brings the best in the fighter but doesn't decide about the matchmaking (for mere trainer at least).

I think it will be the next big duo in boxing. Well, that depends on Freddie's Parkinsons.
