Its not impossible to get work at the moment. Like somebody said the best thing is to 'punch above your weight'. Go for jobs that you may feel under qualified for, but go for them with a unique style. I have chanced my arm several times and it usually comes off. Just show employers a style that they don't see everyday. It may get you laughed out of the place, but it might just get you the job. Otherwise, if you apply for job based purely on experience/qualifications you will almost always find somebody better qualified than you. Be unique and be memorable. That would be my advice.

Guess who has got laid off again?
That's right, twice in one year. I'm close to breaking point lately struggling to pay off all the depts I accumulated earlier in the year after I got laid off and now I'm facing another redundancy right before chistmas.  X 10

An easy job to land is a yard foreman.
For example, search on Yell.com for Coach Hire in your area then ring around to see if they need helping out... The little firms usually need a bit of a low-pay tidy up guy after all the laying off done in the past year. (Thats a fact btw  )
It's probably long hours and you'll have to blag a bit but you be lucky, i know you will.
