Punch Power: 152 | | Paul Williams...I'm not sold. +393 I understand that Paul Williams recently beat the crap out of Winky Wright, and he only has one lost that he immediately avenged by effectively making Quintana sit down to pee, and then trading him for a pack of cigarettes.
I see that. I understand it.
And moreover, if you lump that together with a win over Margarito, and the fact that he's 6'1" with an insane 82" reach, it makes Williams a very interesting Welter, and just by virtue of his size, presumably unbeatable at that weight.
But what's missing from his resume` is a puncher, and someone who can match his height and reach. Because until he fights someone close to his size, can we really tell how good a boxer he is? My honest (albeit, maybe some what cynical) assessment is that Paul is somewhat of a "one-trick-pony" -- he uses his jab/reach to control the distance, and because his reach is so much greater than his opponents', it makes counter-punching a much more difficult thing (for Winky, an impossible thing, whose reach is 10in shorter). Which, by-the-way, is completely sound, correct boxing but Williams being strictly reliant upon reach just does not warrant his P4P ranking.
Sergio Gabriel Martinez has got to be one the most underrated, under-advertised fighters out there...I honestly can't think of a better example. I thought he CLEARLY beat Cintron, and his performance before that was a complete domination.
(...and my wife thinks he's handsome. Won't shut-up about it.)
Most importantly, SGM brings a 76in reach--the longest reach of any notable fighter Williams has faced.
Williams is a talented boxer only by virtue of his height and reach, much the same as the brothers K, Vitali and Vladimir. Being 6' 1" with an 82in reach is truly ridiculous for a Welter, but as you move up in weight those things diminish, for instance, I think the 6' 2" middleweight champion with a 75in reach would have been a much different fight than everyone is claiming it would have been, (and now will never be?)
I'm sorry to see the Pavlik fight go away because it would have either made Williams make an in-fight adjustment and propel himself to a deserved elite status, or confirmed for me everything I already think about Williams: he's decent boxer with freakishly long arms that is physically a bad draw for most Welterweights who are typically around 5' 9" with a 70-72in reach.
This fight with Sergio probably won't give us everything the Pavlik fight would have, but should be telling none-the-less. It should make Williams dip further into his boxing bag and show us what else he has to offer...but if there's not much else in the bag, Sergio will be the one taking on Pavlik in the next fight.

Punch Power: 1894 | | Re: Paul Williams...I'm not sold. #1 I feel bad for PW because he can't get a fight vs anyone big, I don't know why but it certainly seems that way. And when he does get a big fight, his opponent drops out.
#2 I thought Paul Williams was going to dismantle Kelly Pavlik...southpaw, power puncher, long reach, throws punches in bunches non stop every single round.
#3 Sergio Martinez is a tricky fighter and I think he's a BIG threat to beating Williams who by the way got his ass handed to him by Quintana. Williams needs to be aggressive but Martinez being a slick defensive fighter and a solid counter puncher will give him hell when he misses and PW WILL miss a fair number of times.
This is a more difficult fight for Williams, I can only hope he comes in both guns blazin

Punch Power: 116 | | Re: Paul Williams...I'm not sold. You failed to mention that Paul is non stop averaging over 100 punches a round which would give ANYONE a problem. If people would fight Paul maybe his status wouldn't proceed him. I give credit to Paul for climbing up and down weight classes to get a fight. He will fight anybody. |

If he hadn't come out with all this stuff about how he's come out of his natural weight-class to find fights I wouldn't care, but he made a big thing about it & now he won't come down to meet Martinez at 154? Kind of pisses me off. He's a natural Middleweight who was able to get down to Welter for awhile, but now probably would find it tough making LMW. I'd have more respect if he'd admit that rather than carry on with this talk of being ducked by everyone from 147-175. |

This is a more difficult fight for Williams, I can only hope he comes in both guns blazin | #1--He's not worth his lack of draw; he needs more fights like this to get more fans clamoring.
#2--By no stretch of the imagination is he a power puncher. Incredible reach, better than average speed, and tons of volume--those are all his selling points, but if he great power, Winky wouldn't have lasted the thru the 5th round. Kelly Pavlik is a power puncher,he's a little taller than Williams, and has the reach to counter-punch him, (maybe; there's still a 7in difference in reach). Perhaps Williams could have boxed him to death, but at least this time it would have been a case of Williams just having 10in reach advantage on someone.
#3--Quintana did win the first fight. No question. No better answer to a loss than a first round mollywopping though. Sergio is a hell of a boxer, and I think this is going to be one of the greatest fights that no one is going to watch, unfortunately. In my mind, this fight hinges on Sergio's ability to counter, and disrupt Williams' rhythm and volume. |

Punch Power: 408 | | Re: Paul Williams...I'm not sold. How can you not be sold on Paul Williams? If someone asked god to create the boxer that absolutely NO ONE would want to fight, it would be Paul Williams. Southpaw, INCREDIBLE punch output, FREAKISH reach, IRON chin, accuracy, good power, tough, and black. The guy is an absolute freak. If he's the champion of your division, consider dropping down or going up a division. |

He's had big fights and it's what he did that made people like Floyd Mayweather Jr. a bit apprehensive about fighting him.
2. Williams has some good pop, he leveled Quintana pretty good. It's just he usually overwhelms people with his output, I think that style will start to change when he adds more weight.
3. Sergio Martinez is exactly like Williams, too dangerous for anyone to take a chance vs. Martinez is a tough TOUGH fighter to beat. |
