Default Roy Jones may fight for free

Thomas Hauser's latest column indicates that Jones' deal to fight Hopkins is structured so that: first the promotional expenses are paid, then Hopkins receives his 3.5 million dollars, then Jones receives the next 3.5 million dollars, then the fighters split the rest if anything is left over.

Accordingly, Jones ONLY gets paid if the show makes enough money to cover cost and pay Hopkins his 3.5 million dollars.

Thus Jones could be out of luck if this ppv does not sell well.

....if anything they should be showing this garbage for free. Even then this fight still wouldn't make any sense. Funny to see b-hop hyping shane up to get his ass kicked while he runs from real fights to show the world he's just a capable as danny green. And i bet he even takes longer than green did.

I can't picture too many people paying for this, I doubt they even fill up half the venue.

Jones would have known he was on peanuts for this. Guess it's his final roll of the dice. Sad way to go out

"Hard to negotiate with Roy" has come to this? He has to know this is a desperation shot because he knows he is shot. I don't even mention Roy to the younger guys because what they have been seeing will only make me look foolish if I try to tell them how special he really was for like 15 years straight. Now this

I agree with Mar that it's a joke that this fight is on ppv. Roy reached the point of desperation long before this though, as HBO (with the exception of the Calzaghe fight, which also bombed btw) has pretty much wiped their hands clean of Jones. He's simply not a fighter that people have any interest in watching fight any more, let alone paying to watch.

Not really. HBO passed on the fight all together. So Goldenboy is going to produce it with their own ppv and HBO's only role will be distributing it. Which means that you wont see any HBO graphics, HBO commentators, or ever see this fight re-run on HBO.

How will they be "distributing" it then?

I don't understand what that means.

That's so sad. He's going to lose and possibly not make any money. I still don't think he'll retire but hopefully he'll have a hard look at things and decide to have a last hurrah in Florida against some tomato can then retire. He deserves better than this after his career, this is awful.

I feel sick reading this, he is the greatest fighter I have ever seen bar none and he's 10 years past his best trying to find old glory which will not happen and now he's fighting potentially for nothing against a man he beat comfortably with one hand over 16 years ago.

It's time to give it up Roy, as great as you were it's over!

The only worthwhile protest is simply not to watch this fight.

I refuse to. I don't think it will be competitive, and I don't want to see Roy get hurt.

I think all concerned with this (DLF, Hopkins, Jones) should be ashamed, but especially DLH and Hopkins. A victory for Hopkins here means nothing, proves nothing and counts for nothing IMO.
