Default Recent superstars to be who went bust

Ok this a list of some of the great 'sure thing' prospects who were going to win world titles and be great, but who fell short at an early hurdle. A few I can think of, add your own, and then predict a few more.

    Joel Julio
    - A few years ago this guy was the next big thing, I must admit I was totally sold on him. I remember Lampley describing him as liquid dynamite or something, but he turned out to be pretty mediocre. Quintana burst the bubble and since then he's lost two more. Now he's a mere gatekeeper and the guy Angulo is expected to make a highlight reel out of at the weekend.

John Duddy - Again prior to his fight with Yory Boy Campas he was very highly regarded. That fight with the old veteran was wildly exciting, but exposed the flaws in him. Since then he's looked pretty awful, not even his family members would give him much hope of winning a world title now, he might not even get a shot.

Andy Lee - This guy was supposed to be the future star of the middleweight division, with the backing and support of world class trainer Manny Steward. But he gets beat up bad by a Contender nobody and only barely survived against some unknown European domestic level guy last time out. His world championship credentials look - unlikely shall we say, at this time.

Antonio Escalante To be fair he is winning right now and maybe will get into the mix again but his knockout loss to the unheralded Pastrana really derailed his future star career. A quick look at boxrec shows Pastrana went on to lose 6 of his 7 fights since being KO'd in half of them. It doesn't bode well for Antonio's future.

Sechew Powell. Three years ago it seemed inevitable that he was rising to the top of the light middleweight heap, then he lost to Deandre Latimore and has been in the wilderness ever since. A revenge win last month may get him back on track, but like those above his career has been disappointing.

There are others who have seemingly fallen short, Victor Ortiz for example but he may well yet rebound from that loss and be a championship calibre fighter.

Those above though seem to have lost any realistic chances well before they reached challenging for the top.

So what guys do you see falling flat from the current lot?

Erislandy Lara didn't impress last time out, and I'm thinking he won't make the cut.

James Kirkland is languishing in jail and the future of his career looks less than rosy.

So what other guys can you think of, and who do you think, amongst the current prospects will come up short.

PS. Don't say Amir Khan, as he already won a world title

Well I don't know if Escalante was considered sure thing (he never was even that hyped up) and I'm not sure Powell was either. Escalante is on a roll too so I wouldn't include him.

Jorge Linares. Not sure he's gone bust but he got KO'd last time out and he was without a doubt hyped up and thought of as a sure thing.

I can remember back before the Pastrana loss that Escalante was pretty hyped.

Linares I guess did win a belt so he reached the top, but his fall from grace has been pretty huge. I mean he looked a future p4p star a couple years ago and now.........

Sechew Powell was expected to be on a course for a world title which is why I included him.

I think Edison Miranda got a lot of hype before and after his first loss to Abraham, ever since then he was made to look ordinary.

Definatly Jeff Lacy falls into this section

if Khan is saved due to winning a title, Lacy should get the same treatment he won the IBF Super Middleweight title, hence is exempt

I agree Lacy made it all the way to a superfight.

I don't think Edison counts either, he gave Artur Abraham a hell of a first fight and has since fought in several world title bouts, although losing them all.

I'm talking here about young prospects, seen as big talents, and maybe the future of their divisions on the way up, but who fall short before even challening for the top, i.e losing to a journeyman like Escalante, Duddy and Lee, or losing the first time they step up to fringe world level like Julio did against Quintana.

Miranda must have fought in at least 5 world title fights, he's not what I'm talking about.

Julio never even got there, he fits the bill perfectly.

Anyway my question was out of the current prospects who won't make it to world level.

Some prospects I can think of, tell me if you think they will succeed or not.

    Guillermo Rigondeaux
    Erislandry Lara
    Odlanier Solis
    Daniel Jacobs
    Shawn Porter
    Fernando Gurrero
    Matt Korobov
Antony Peterson ( I think it was Lamont who fought Bradley? That means he fought for the top at least and got there despite losing)

Those are a few of the talents I can think of. So who do we think will make it and won't?

I consider Gamboa to have just about arrived now, holding an interim title or whatever so he's moved beyond the kind of prospects I'm talking about

I almost immediately thought of David Reid. Trinidad (and his eye) ruined him.

About 10 years too late for this thread though

I'm talking about the current prospects. Which ones will fall short BEFORE stepping up to fight world titles.

Powell was still on the bounce back when he lost to Latimore, he was by no means considered a sure thing at the time. He had lost and had won so ugly that he was basically written off. With Escalante, he wasn't talked about for his tremendous talent it's just that he was an exciting young fighter and that's why he generated buzz. He's actually an overachiever imo and now has the FOTY so far and it might hold up throughout the year. Til Izzy and Rafa fight again at least.

Escobedo qualifies for sure, he has smarts and talent just not enough of the physical attributes to succeed.

Aaron Williams, got KO'd by the Colombian then got robbed in Germany and no one seems to care anymore. Sad because I thought he was a future heavyweight hopeful. Oh well.

Yeah with Powell I mean prior to the Ouma loss really. He was the strong, unbeaten up and comer much like how Kirkland, Angulo, and now Guerreo and Jacobs have been seen

Wasn't Carlos Quintana a pretty hyped prospect?

Jacobs will probably be on this list a few years from now
