Daily Star: Simply The Best 7 Days A Week :: In The Ring :: Larry Olubamiwo: I've got Lennox Lewis on my side

Bit of a plug but hey...I figured everybody knows who Lennox Lewis is and who Freddie Roach is

The titles a bit of an exageration..it's not like Lewis is training him but Larry told me he got to work with him on a surprise visit which was priceless.

Well, he's the southern area heavyweight champion at the moment and his next fight June 25th in Brentwood is a British and Commonwealth heavyweight title eliminator against Dave Ferguson..so hopefully my boy is moving on to big things.

He still needs to tighten up his defence big-time..but his power and relentless style will be difficult for anyone to overcome.

If anyone missed his last fight for the title, here's the link..

I think he is awesome! Love his style and raw power, he is such a beast!

Still quite rough around the edges, but then he hasn't had many pro fights so it's to be expected. I've had my eye on him since I saw one of his early fights, I think I might have actually seen every pro fight (am I right in saying even his debut was on TV?)

What's your relationship to him? You know him well?

Yeah his debut was on TV too. I think every fight he has had so far has been televised on Sky Sports.

Yeah, he's one of my best friends - We used to work in the same gym. Genuinely one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet

Hasn't had many pro and only had about 9 or 10 amateur bouts.

That's what I thought, I don't remember him losing though and his record shows a loss. All I remember his him raining bombs on his victims.

He looks like a body builder who has only just learnt to punch!

I've eard he's very committed to the gym though and very keen to learn so I think he'll do well, but he has kind of been thrown in the deep end, not bad going to be touted as the next British champion after less than 20 fights in total! including amatuer!

Does that mean your gonna be at the big event then? Should be a good card, I'm looking forward to seeing that other guy make his debut, heard from a few places he is very deadly. And of course the main event should be a cracker!

Will any of those guys they listed will end up being quality fighters?

    Olubamiwo
    Price
    Chisoria
    Whyte
    Dallas

I've seen a bit of Olubamiwo and Chisoria....I think Larry is a bit raw still and I think Chisoria is a bastard but that's beside the point.

The UK Heavyweight scene is packed with prospects. Healthy state the division is in the UK. The old guard of Williams and Skelton appear to have finished their careers. While David Haye holds a World title and is still relatively young for a Heavyweight.

Whyte sounds an interesting prospect though I know little about him. Mike Perez the Cuban is fighting out of Ireland.
Tyson Fury, Sam Sexton and Derek Chisora already at British title level.

Also, alot of these guys are pretty tall Heavyweights.

    Towers 6'8
    Tom Dallas 6'6
    David Price 6'8
    Tyson Fury 6'7
    Larry Olubamiwo 6'4

If nothing else the UK fans should be treated to some good match-ups between this lot of the next few years.

It is more of a Psyche thing...Kind of like being a kid and getting into a fight with a guy that has been giving you a hard time....By yourself you were a bit nervous but if your older brother was around all of a sudden you were not nervous anymore

Yeah Larry still has a lot to work on but what I like about him is that he knows that and it's a healthy attitude to have - Larry sparred with Whyte and told me yesterday that he is very good. You may be able to find a cage fight of his by typing his name into Google.

I'm not sure Price is made out for the Pro's? He just doesn't seem to have that killer instinct?

Dallas is looking handy but his level of competition wasn't that good until he took out Lee Swaby in a round last month which was impressive. Definitely one to watch but a bit stiff and upright.

Chisora did what he had to do against Williams but that's not saying much..quick'ish hands but I think he'll lose that title against one of the other prospects.

Also you have Towers who is looking pretty good and of course, Fury who has his rematch on June 25th with John Mcdermott who can hopefully correct the robbery from the first fight!

The heavyweight scene is looking good but I can't help many of them would have a better chance if they were in better shape. (Chisora and Fury I'm looking at you)

I think he's being pushed through quickly because he's 30 years old. The others have a lot more time so I believe Frank is being more conservative with them.

His loss was to Daniel Peret..yeah...I know, he lost to Shrek He ran out of steam after the 2nd round - I think he over trained for that fight because he was working full time and was moving house for most of the month..but he doesn't really tell people that, he's not really one for excuses.

As much as I love big Larry, Richard Towers is the one that will go furthest for me. I think right now he'd beat Larry, but what a slug fest it would be!

Shame records are so important, or else we might have been lucky to see some of them facing each other sooner rather than later.
