    Default Calderon - Segura spoiler

Calderon just got stopped in the 8th. It was a great fight from what I saw, but Segura just wore him down and punished his body.

not shocking really, i pretty much summed it up in the other thread, Calderon's speed isn't what it was nor are his reflexes, i haven't seen the fight but i think Calderon (who's ancient for a 108 lb fighter at 35) should hang them up

GREAT win for segura but you've got to give it to the little maestro, ivan calderon. i think age has finally caught up to him. a younger calderon would have beaten segura for sure. but a big congrats to segura who is now considered the jr. flyweight king.

i want to see segura fight rodel mayol next and destroy and little cheating fucker. the way mayol cheated his way against edgar sosa still turns my stomach.

Gotta admit I was shocked when I read this Sat. night I like Segura and I've had the opp. to talk to him see him train and see him fight in person.
He's a really cool guy but honestly I gave him no chance at beating Calderon.

I thought he'd be clearly outboxed.

Really proud of Segura as he's from out here in LA (Mexican born) but raised in LA.

Calderon was ahead on the cards comfortabely. I guess his age caught up with him . I wouldnt mind seeing a rematch if Calderon really still feels like he has it in him to win the fight.

As for Segura, he has heart , good stamina but isnt anything special imo .

He was behind on two of the cards, justifiably from what I saw. Only the Puerto Rican judge had Calderon winning.

just watched the fight yesterday and i had Segura ahead in a close fight, i actually think Calderon can outbox him in a rematch, he fought the wrong fight and at times just traded with Segura which is completely moronic if your fighting the hardest banger at your weight and well Calderon is the polar opposite, it was a good fight and i give credit to Segura he fought his fight and landed beautiful body shots, but there should be a rematch and Calderon has already stated that he wants a rematch in 2011 cause he's planning on taking the rest of the year off, in an article i read his exact comments were (obviously translated)

"i fought the wrong fight, i fought his fight, and paid for it"

"i'm taking the rest of the year off, i think i deserve a vacation, but i also deserve the chance to comeback after a defeat just as others such as Tito Trinidad and Miguel Cotto have"

IMO a fully focused and strategic Calderon gets the UD against Segura in a close fight

as much as i respect ivan calderon as a great fighter, i don't think he can do anything to turn the tables if there ever was a rematch! he just doesn't have the power to keep segura off him. in a rematch, segura would go straight for the body from the beginning and i don't think calderon would be able to handle the body work again. segura by TKO but this time only a bit sooner.

Was a great fight, one of the FOTY that's for sure. Round 5 was fantastic. Agree with what people say, Ivan Calderon looked good but his age has caught up with him. Was constant pressure from Segura but, fair play to Ivan, he was landing the heavier shots at the start of the fight. Good defensive work and his footwork was as good as ever. The amount of wild punches thrown by Segura was something else - as was the amount that he missed.

I guess judges looked at the pressure fighter more, calderon won the first 4 on my card, and then obviously blew the fifth but I thought he edged 6 and 7 to be honest. He looked spent though and got blown away in the eighth

Segura is one tough kid..He kept his strategy of attacking the body..and it did pay off...

my friend, there is no need for that..Get over Mayol..He got beaten by Omar NiƱo..
Why not focus on Segura unifying the 108-lb division? That would be much better right?

I think this is the key right here. 35 might not be old for a heavyweight, but it's definitely old for a 108-pounder. Speed and reflexes are the first to go, and Ivan has never been known for his power. Calderon has had a stellar career, and should be a first ballot HOF'er... but I think he should seriously consider retiring.
