Question What do people think of shows like the Contender

The Contender or the up and coming Magnificent 7 to me seem to be packed with some very talented boxers who have careers at various levels of acheivements.

Sat in the local last night was a friendly debate about these shows being a re-launch of some failing careers.

I'm not sure I agree with that train of thought, but wondered what the better informed amongst you think.

I think they are interesting shows and I like them.

Need to get a little more involved in their training rather than showing the cheezy interview where every boxer says they are prepared to die in the ring and cries a little, then goes out and hugs their way to a decision loss.

I think it should be a regular thing. UFC took the idea and has done great with it. Contender was good, just needed to have a little more variety in it.

Boxing fans are the worst to ask about these types of shows. All will complain that we need more boxing on, then proceed to say how the shitty boxers on the show don't deserve to be on tv?

I liked the Contender when it first came out, though I lost interest pretty quickly. I think the cheesy, subjective editing and the way it was presented was all wrong, but I guess that's what happens when you try to put a sports-reality show on prime tv network tv.

Initially, it seemed to do a good job of getting casual sports fans interested in boxing, but it was never able to really sustain or build upon that initial interest. A guy I work with was really into the show at first and he and I still occasionally talk about the sport, but he doesn't follow it at all really.

I like them. But I'd be happier if the entire show was condensed into half the time, less of the dramatic music and cuts to an empty ring, or highlights of crap you've just watched.

If they just kept it simple it would be better.

I'm all for new quirky things, I still think Prizefighter is an excellent idea, although I think the show needs to be revamped and improved now.

I could never get into them although a lot of my friends became fans of boxing because of it.

Just horrible on the production end of things. Worst editing i've ever seen in an attempt to make it stylistic. terrible, terrible, terrible. Other then that I was a fan of the show and like the concept and any exposure to the main steam for the sport.

Nah, no interest in an hour long show about their lives, upbringings, families, how he HAS to win this fight...

I prefer just seeing the athletic contest with a few interviews, a few promos, and maybe a bit of training footage.

Shows becomes too contrived with dudes trying to be actors, trying to do things to make the show exciting.

Hey, it gives them exposure though right, can help with marketability.

Different strokes for different folks, but I don't watch them...
