    Hey

Just wrote this video-based analysis of Marvelous Marvin Hagler and would be really interested in knowing whther it's worthy of a thread on Saddo's 'Boxing Talk'. Any thoughts, views or contradictions?

    Cheers

I think I read something presented in the same way but on Roberto Duran... Was that you?

    *** Edit ***

Yeah it was you... That was good stuff! Look forward to reading this one

Yeah he certainly does. He has married an Italian and does bits of acting and stuff. That's one guy who deserves all of the respect in the world because when he walked away from boxing, that's exactly what he did, walked away! No half-baked comebacks for that man!

Enjoyed that analysis on Hagler, i only have this to say. How would the Marvelous one handle the piston like jab of Monzon and that right hand accurately nicknamed 'shotgun'? Monzon was a beast of a fighter, tall, powerful, tough, with not only punching power but superb boxing skils both offensively and defensively. Monzon's only flaw was he didn't train, (started preparation just weeks before a big fight), smoked like a chimney, drank like a fish and fucked anything that moved. Now what would have happened if Monzon really put his mind to his work? Hagler was totally dominant in the 80's as was Monzon in the 70's, a Hagler V Monzon fight is worth analysis on it's own.
Loved both fighters, i just wish Hagler had got the rematch with Leonard.

I think in a hypothetical Haggler vs Monzon matchup you'd have to lean towards Marvin for the following reasons...
#1 He's a southpaw, the jab (no matter how great) would have not been the wise punch to keep pushing out there.

#2 Haggler's work rate, he worked every second of every round

#3 Haggler's chin, if he could take flush shots from Tommy Hearns he could take shots from anyone

#4 Distance, Haggler would smother Monzon. Monzon was a fighter who liked to get lots of leverage on his punches and it's hard to transfer that weight from the back foot to the front foot when someone is right in your chest.

I just think if you're going to beat Marvin Haggler you'd either need big time Bob Foster type power or loads of speed and either way you'd need great stamina and solid defense.

I think Monzon would have belted Hagler, Monzon was a lot tougher than Hearns and that right hand was paralyzing. The southpaws worst enemy!

I stand by my answer, Haggler is too tough and too relentless for Monzon

Prime for Prime Hagler beats Monzon by late ko or UD .
Monzon was just to robotic , Marvin would have beaten him for sure.

I would have to lean toward Marvin also, but that's not to say that Monzon couldn't have won! Check out the Willie 'The Worm' fight; similar build/height to Monzon but not nearly as intense and Willie had troubled Marvin in previous encounters. If it would have happened with both fighters at their peak then it would have been the war of wars. As for the right hand, Hagler was an incredibly versatile and clever fighter and he would have dealt with Carlos' right hand by simply moving to Monzon's left behind the metronomic piston of a double and triple jab.

Marvin by late KO or points.

Top thread by the way boys, as always I find some real boxing brains on Saddo. Long may it continue!!!!

I always looked at Marvin as one of the few fighters in history you never need to question how good he really was or if he was over rated etc....Hagler fought in a very strong era of MWTS he could take a punch like very few and he could dish out the punishment just as well if not better...Marvin in the clutch never fell apart and he never backed down....

The punches Hagler took from John Mugabi would have retired most fighters and made Hagler piss pure blood for almost a week straight.....When Hearns had the better of him Hagler did what a champion does and makes you come take what belonged to him he was not laying down be it quiet or otherwise....

Hagler was simply put Hagler and the moniker "Marvelous" fit perfectly...Always a gentleman, always in shape, always ready to fight who was next in line without a question or complaint....

After the Leonard fight Hagler walked away from the sport rightfully so because he gave boxing what it asked for in a champion, fighter and representive of the game...In return he was screwed and treated like another fighter to help the Leonard bandwagon keep going and in losing was not even given credit for the performance while he deserved to still hold his title..... almost as if he was robbed called the police and they arrested him.

Hagler would have beaten Monzon, Hopkins and Jones on will alone......Perhaps the greatest MW to ever wear the title

Monzon liked to come into his fights with a half ass training camp. If he did that in a hypothetical matchup with Hagler, Monzon ain't walking out of that ring as champ or with his senses intact.

Yeah he was infamous for being a party animal be it during training or not....

With that being said imagine how much better would ha have been if he was always in top shape?.....

Monzon was a great fighter, Hagler was a total beast. I go with the Marvelous one by a K.O around the 7 against a tired and smothered Monzon.
