Default Manny Steward: Public won't buy Mosley-Pac fight

Emanuel Steward: The Public Won't Buy Pacquiao-Mosley - Boxing News

I usually don't like posting Michael Marley articles, but this one has quotes from Manny Steward who knows boxing.

Steward is saying that the public won't buy the Mosley-Pac fight because of his last 2 outings with Floyd and Mora where he looked absolutely horrible. Steward also believes that if a fight with Floyd can't be made then it should be with JMM for a 3rd fight. He also points out that Pac was 144.5 pounds at the weigh in against Margaresto and could have something work out with JMM.

I agree with Steward, i wouldn't buy it. Who wants to watch Mosley after his last performance. I'm sure if it did happen though we would hear from Arum and Roach how great Mosley is, and how horrible of a camp Pac is having to try to sell the fight. It will still do decent numbers because most Filipinos will buy regardless of who he is fighting.... i know my wife is fillipina.

My thoughts on this are that the public and casual sports fans would buy this fight because they are the ones that makes up the bulk of PPV sales not hardcore boxing fans. At this point of Pac's career whether it's a fight with JMM, Mosley, Berto, or the winner of Alexander/Bradley it will do very good numbers as in 800k and up, at least. A lot of hardcore boxing fans boycotted the Pac-Margarito fight and it still did 1.15 million US PPV sales, especially when Margarito did a very dismal number on PPV with Garcia prior to his fight with Pac.

Certain fighters with certain promoters can turn PPV shit into gold. See King and Tyson-McNeely or Arum and Pac-Margarito. Or other recent fights that were shit was turned into PPV gold, Haye-Harrison, Haye-Ruiz, although that was in the UK, those are examples that casual people and sports fans will buy it if it's promoted right.

And Filipino-Americans aren't the only ones buying Pac fights, I would bet the white Americans and the Latino Americans made up the bulk of the Pac/Margo US PPV sales, since those 2 groups comprised of anywhere between 80-85 percent of the US population.

I can not see how people think this fight wouldn't sell. I'm all for this fight and I'm sure most hardcore boxing fans would watch/buy this fight. Pac is now a serious draw against any able body. He drew very well against Clottey and exceptional against Margarito. Mosley is better than both of them. Remember Margarito looked horrible in his last 2 fights before the Pac fight. Mosley only looked like he is on the downside. Mainly because he fought PBF and partly because Mora didn't come to fight. Mosley and Pac is a very good fight if it is done by early next year. I am sure people will play this off like Pac is facing nobody in Mosley but Mosley is very well capable of ending Pac's run. I'd much rather see Pac face Mosley than a "not ready" Berto. PBF is out of the next fight talk so JMM is probably the best fight, Martinez is too big of a well rounded boxer, but Mosley has enough left for Pac to get a pass for taking him on. Relax, Pac said he will fight until he is 35. Let him take on Mosley and then JMM. They are the two aged fighters. So it would make sense for Pac to fight them first and by then we'll see who the top of the young guns is at 140.

    Exactly.

The general public are sheep, you can sell them anything. The X-factor, Harrison-Haye, Hitler, loss of personal freedoms in the name of fighting terror. Mosley/Pac is an easy sell after all of that. Heck, if I was told I had to choose one, even I would go for Mosley/Pac. It's a shame that it would have taken another year of poor Mosley performances to get us this far, but I would expect nothing less from that crook Arum and that opportunist Roach.

I've said this before, The P4P rankings are a big factor. Just look at the two biggest draws in boxing. PFB and PAC. Why because common folk don't know who the champions are as they are ranked in the multiple sanctioning bodies.

People turnout to watch the playoffs, the Superbowl and the World cup. When the champ is fighting, people show up. In this boxing era, the reigning "Heavyweight Champion of the World is Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao" i.e. people understand the Champion on top of the P4P list.

So your wife represents the Filipinos? I would not buy this fight and I am a Filipino. HBO 24/7 made you believe that Manny is all high and mighty here in the Philippines. Pacquiao won the elections in province with the relevance of a peanut when it comes to generating income. I hate it when people generalize and thinks all Filipinos bow down to Pacquiao. Pacquiao is relevant on his fight night, after that he is just another celebrity.

Who said that is was? The context I use is a metaphor. Of course P4P ranking are purely hypothetical. Yes it was originally just a discussion game that has been evolving into something else. However, to be called P4P king has tangible value.

Ricky Hatton and Shane Mosley covet it. Floyd envy's Pacquiao's beloved popularity. Although Pacquiao exhibits humility, he is basking in it. ("My accomplishments compared to him", "facial gesture") Even Martinez and Williams want the recognition. The list goes on and on. It's no longer enough to be a unified champion, but the goal seems to be crowned the P4P king. With it come enormous popularity and recognition. Name branding and enforcements. Let us not forget multi-million dollar fights and so forth.

The joke is, the alphabet belts are like trinkets or tournament trophies that just collect dust. Writers, main stream media and the like all observe this from boxing fans and experts of the sport. (Many fans and experts truly believe the belts have lost their value.) Perhaps they take note of lack of respect given to many of the champions that obtain these belts as compared to those who are climbing the P4P lists. All the negative talk about the sanctioning bodies has a profound effect on the sport. The sport of boxing is evolving and the P4P rankings are playing a big role. So being #1 on the P4P list seems to have replaced the recognition that was once given to "The Heavyweight Champion of the World" i.e. "The Greatest Champion of them All".

This is my interpretation of what is happening in boxing and why I disagree with Stewart's opinion that people won't by a Mosley / Pacquiao fight. People will buy it because Shane Mosley is a very big name in boxing and Pacquiao is on the top of the list. It's a championship game. Not the eliminator.

Never heard it put that way, but it perfectly describes the play of things in boxing right now... And people will pay to see the guys who are at the top of their sport.. .mostly regardless of who they are against....

And should have just ignored milmascaras1. He's just going through his usual morning routine..

Before Floyd beat Shane, I thought Shane would have been the one to beat Manny.
    Now . . .
    I'm beting on Mosley!!!
Don't pay for it if you don't want to. I'll give play by play, round by round!!!

Mayweather ruined Mosley. Shane litterally aged with each round.

He just drew with Sergio Mora who is shit.

I think Pacquiao would beat him fairly easily and probably stop him. He's damaged goods, so pac will probably fight him.

Shae lose to a great boxer in Floyd. A fighter that made the adjustments within the round that he almost got KO'ed. That don't say, he's washed!!! Manny is not a pocket fighter like Mayweather. Manny will pulled back unlike Mayweather pushing threw.

Mosley by KO 10 over Pacman

This fight will sell. The vast majority of PPV buyers will be causal fans that either get sucked into the hype or buy because Manny is one half of the face of boxing right now. I don't like a Mosley match up, he's fading and there's better options for Manny that are more interesting to me, but this fight will most likely be the one to happen because Mosley is the most recognizable opponent and will sell better than other fights outside of a Mayweather fight
