    Default Pryor v Arguello II

Just watching the highlights of it on TV and I'm wondering...who would beat a prime Hawk at 140? The guys a freaking monster

AA beat him the 1st time around and would have beat him the 2nd time also.

I've seen the 1st fight possibly 30 times and everything I see there on film and what unfolded in the aftermath tells me AA was cheated out of becoming a 4 div. champ...

No one can convince me otherwise.

A dream match up for me would be Pryor vs Pacquiao. I think Pacquiao wins a total war!!

In my opinion, plenty of guys would have, I feel that Pryor is mercilessly overrated, largely because of weak opposition and an exciting style.

His first fight with Arguello leads me to believe that better fighters than him who have passed through 140 like Mayweather, Whitaker & Pacquiao would all have beaten him. I also would fancy De La Hoya & Chavez to do a job on him at the weight.

Don't get me wrong, he was a very good fighter, just not great imo, and his difficulties against a naturally smaller man in Arguello & Cervantes make me think he gets stopped by most of those guys.

He had alot of trouble vs Gary Hinton, who was a slick fighter. But not in the league of someone like Pernell Whitaker, which leads me to believe a fighter like Pernell Whitaker. Would of had the best style vs Aaron Pryor.

Weak opposition... Yeah that one makes me cringe a little bit. Hawk Time had all the tools and the heart to become a really great champion in his day. Through NO fault of his own, his opposition was a little weak, but he didn't have a choice. Nobody woudl fight the guy. Leonard refused, Hearns had moved to middleweight by that time, and Binetez was up to LMW by that time. He had cleared out his division of foes willing to almost litterally fight "anybody." Because, at that time, to most people who were not enthusists, he was just a somebody. Arguello carried the crowns down to the orange bowl for that first fight. The Hawk wasn't really all that personable of a guy, his entourage was obnoxious and flagrant to most people.

BUT I loved the guy. I wish we had another hawk today. His son doesn't have a flame to what kind of wildfire that guys would produce in the ring. I this Boxrec puts him a little low on the totem pole at #9 all time. BUt hell, I just don't know who the f** [Duilio Loi, et al] are, so who am I to say?

All I am saying is this Aaron Pryor would have been almost as much trouble at LWW as Duran at LW
"Floyd needs to inject Xylocaine into his balls to gain the courage to fight Pacquiao."

    - and I quote from some random guy on the internet

Loi is a legendary fighter from italy, worth trying to track down what little their is of him (I've found little), skilled as hell.

Pryor could box but more often then not went hell bent and frontal. He was hittable and dinged more then a few times. Biggest opponent was coming up and still held own 1st time around. Movers with fast hands and straight shots. Out of the box....but anyone give a Camacho a shot I would. Rosario changed his career after stunning him late but had all tools to frustrate shit outta a Pryor. Biggest question would he go man or mouse with a buzzsaw like Pryor. Pernell for sure! What about, dont laugh, a Frankie Randall when he hit stride? As solid a straight hitter, combination puncher down the middle and some nice footwork when in tip top form.

Pryor was a phenom but more often then not it comes down to a what would have happened kind of guy, career shortened and was a quick meteor type fighter. Alot of mystic on things-fighters he didn't get to take part in just a bit.

Kostya Tszyu of course would have been another great fight for the Hawk. I'm not sure anyone could handle his one - two more than a few times and against Pryor I think it would have landed regular!!

If I recall, in the second fight Arguello was doing some pretty good body punching and Pryor was using the ring a bit, and then Arguello seemed to hurt him with a right to the body, doubled Pryor up. Seemed a legal punch to me, but the referee (Steele?) called it low. After that Pryor came on and stopped Arguello.
At 140, Chavez really hurts Pryor. I think that Duran would have beaten him, too.
