Default What ever happened to Winky Wright?

Where the hell has he been, I know he was training Dawson for Hopkins but other than that what has he been doing? And can he still be competitive inside the ring with his defense not what it once was and his lack of power and lack of stamina these days?

he didn't look good against Williams and that was a while back, IMO any top Middleweight would own him, I know he has a small promotion company he might be working with that right now and trying his hand at training

He could probably still come back and beat Felix Sturm. The middleweight division is incredibly weak. But obviously Martinez would destroy him. I'm pretty sure Winky is just retired for good at this point though.

it's really not as bad as most think, it's starting to take shape again with Sturm mixing it up more and Macklin getting more exposure, throw in Pirog, Lee, the Silver Spooned prince, and then King Martinez, and you have a couple interesting bouts at 160, IMO Sturm would outbox Winky easily, his defense is just as tight and he has been more active, IMO Winky is done

Dude is 40, he hasn't had a fight in 2 1/2 years, and hasn't won one in 5.

Winky Wright must have retired because there is no way he is coming back competitive, he just has not announced it publically yet a bit like Israel Vasquez.

WW just had no where to go at the end. He beat the Mosely who had just beaten ODLH and sent Trinidad into premature retirement. Both formidable achievements.

But after that, only Jermain Taylor...who was in his redhot prime....gave him a big fight. After Taylor escaped with a draw every elite figured out that they better avoid WW. He wasn't a big payday and he was just impossible to dominate. And he made everyone look bad.

To be fair, he didn't dominate others, unlike other defensive specialists like PBF or Sweet Pea. So he was more of a quirky survivor than genius. But still, no one ever really figured him out. He was so desperate to fight that he went up to 170 for Bernard Hopkins.

I always respected Paul Williams for taking him on. At the time, Williams had a lot to lose. He was being touted by the boxing press as the most dangerous fighter out there, and ironically folks were avoiding him. He was displaying some awesome power and winning in spectacular fashion. WW was therefore a dangerous fight, especially since Williams had already been outboxed once in his career.

Williams didn't really figure WW out either. He simply outworked him and thats fair enough. He still never got enough credit for that, as he was really the only fighter to convincingly beat WW. But then again, WW never got much credit either.

He's been missing a while now.

Hopkins put the guy on a milk carton like he said he would.

( he had a comeback fight against P-will but he got owned.)

I was a big Winky fan and I think he should have gotten the decision against Taylor, but he absolutely screwed himself by pricing himself out of the rematch. He decided to jump one and a half divisions to fight Hopkins and that was pretty much the end.

He didn't win a round against William, but that would always have been a bad style match-up for Winky.

I agree that Winky might still can beat Strum. And maybe the most sensible fight to chase. I would like to see that. But . . . that fight would be a snoooozer. Strum pattern himself after Winky. They almost the same fighter.

A one-sided ass whipping from Paul Williams is what happened to Winky Wright

He was a great fighter though, beat some top guys, but dear God was he a boring spoiler to watch.

He was scheduled to fight Matthew Macklin a while back, before the Sturm fight. He pulled out though because of a hand injury in sparring. Said at the time that he wasnt finished yet.

After the Hopkins loss he didn't want to fight anymore he was out for 2 years after that loss before losing to Paul Williams and being out for another 2 years Hopkins ruined him! he was one of my favourites.

The strange thing is I think he was out a long time fixing his teeth and then when he eventually did comeback he was past it. Strange for a boxer to take time out to fix up some relatively cosmetic dentistry. Now he is just old. I can't see him being back at the top.
