Thread: Soaps

As part of the culture forum I would like to start a thread about soaps that we are watching and some of the issues they are raising. The current issue in Eastenders where Kat, who is fit and probably great in bed, is married to ‘no backbone’ Alfie and they run the pub together. Kat has cheated on Alfie on a number of occasions and even had a child from another man whilst they were married, which Alfie has accepted. Alfie now is allowing her to go out with other men and he does not mind. What sort of man would do that?

The only soap I watch, and this is only due to it been the time I sit down for my dinner is Emmerdale, a good old northern show, forget Corrie, eastenders etc,

Cain get's it tonight for all his carrying on someone finally nails him...... but the big questions is Who is it ??

As a teenager I watched Dallas, Dynasty and Eastenders when it first started. The good old days of Ali Osman and Tony Carpenter

And then I watched Neighbours and Hom and Away during my student years - it killed the time.

Apart from that the only other time I watched a soap was when Reg Hokldsworth was in Coronation Street. The best UK soap character ever in my book. Got to the stage where I just used to smile or start chuckling when he appeared on screen before he had even spoke (only other guy who could make me do that was Tommy Cooper !) - or when he pulled up in his 1275 GT Mini blasting out jazz music. Comedy gold.

Soaps are just time fillers. There is no start middle or end and the writers are pretty random.

Soaps just don't make any sense to me. They serve to do little more than shock or provoke and so the characters have ridiculous arcs. I have nothing against that per se, but I prefer it to be within the realm of something that is beautifully written or has some level of richness. Soaps are base and appeal to nothing more than the lowest common denominator.

They just go on forever and why would you bother spending 3 days a week over 40 years with that? It's very silly.

I fill my time watching the babes, Rosie Webster from Corrie and Kat from Eastenders.

The best soap ever is SOAP.

Im only interested to see if Derek does Phil over, but seriously its gone right down hill. I miss the gangster era of Eastenders.

With you on that mate, Emmerdale is the business. Its the poor relation to the others but thats fine with me.

Laurel would deffo get it, Marlon should have bullied her into bed in a non rape way.

I dont like Eastenders but I do want to live there. Any place where you can get a part time job in a kaff and afford to run a home and spend several nights a week down the boozer is the place for me.
