A lout generally refers to someone whose behaviour exhibits clearly a disregard for others and a loud obnoxious nature. In the UK it is most often prefixed with the word Lager, often in describing inebriated young men who walk down the street spoiling for a fight and shouting obscenities. Sod is different, it is almost an endearing term when prefixed with the word silly. " oh you silly sod" someone may exclaim if a friend or relative is being daft. Even Prefixing it with "Dirty" seems to soften the harshness. While you may be a bit of daft sod I would not imagine you acting like a lout however drunk you were.
Agreed with the above, I always thought sod is short for sodomy which is bumming someone.

Sod off you lout. Lout off you sod Hmm one of them has double powers.
One is from Manchester the other is from Liverpool.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
both terms are out of every day use.
lout is typically only heard in papers with the pre-fix, larger lout.
I have not heard anyone being called a sod since I was a kid, and that was protect my precious ears from foul language shame it didn't work.
I don't know about that. Maybe it's a regional thing but 'sod' is pretty commonplace round by me.
Sod is pretty similar to 'shit' in the way it's used. You could substitute shit for sod in all of the following phrases: Little shit, naughty shit, cheeky shit.... It's used to describe somebody that is mischievious in some way.
