Default Chavez Jr - Andy Lee / June 16th in Texas

I like this match up. How do we see it going?

I have a feeling Chavez will pressurize Lee into succumbing to a 2nd half stoppage.

If it goes the distance, has Lee got any chance of getting a decision against Chavez Jr in Texas? Its hard to believe.

Gee... I'm at a loss here. Can't very well compare Chavez Jr. to a shark. That would be insulting to "shark-kind".

Ok. Another goldfish being fed to the big grouper.

C'mon........ Lee? No offense to Lee fans, but... what credentials does Lee have that would make him a dangerous opponent to Baby Chavez? He's slow... he's clumsy... and not that hard to hit. What does he bring to the table for Chavez? He doesn't strike me as a particularly hard puncher. So he's slow, and not a big puncher. Seems tailor-made for Chavez Jr. Daddy must be pleased.

I think Andy Lee could pull this out. Andy has good handspeed, solid power, and he's a southpaw. Andy is also a bigger middleweight at 6'2 he has 2 inches on JCJr. If nothing else Lee should help prepare JCJr for a fight vs Sergio Martinez. You better believe Andy will get solid sparring in though, he'll be training with Jonathan Banks & the rest of the Manny Steward crew. I would LOVE for Andy to pull off the upset, but to do so he needs to start quick, land some combos, but realize that he'll have to be accurate, not waste energy, and wear JCJr down. I think everybody is correct in their assumptions that Andy won't get a decision, in fact he'll have to try his damnedest not to get hurt or wobbled at all because the fight will get stopped early if he does. It's a good thing he has Manny in his corner though.

I do wish this fight would not take place in Texas. That aside, I think Lee is a more refined boxer and if he can keep giving Jr angles he'll have relatively easy time.

Not nearly as much as I would, Lyle.

However, I wish I was as positive about that as you. You find Lee quick with his hands? I just haven't seen that in the few fights I've seen. A big puncher? Ditto on that one. Ok, so he IS a southpaw. That should give him some advantages. And if he's got Manny in his corner, that's another plus. Oh how I would LOVE to see Junior dumped on his coddled ass. He's (Lee) got his work cut out for him, though. And Manny should remove "get a decision win" from Lee's gameplan. He's not going to get it, unless he knocks down Baby Chavez in every round.

I'd also love to see the upset here but Chavez Jr has progressed to a level above that of Lee's imo

I don't think JCJr will have it all his way but I see him stopping Lee in the later rounds

I think Lee can hurt JC....he's got to use a little defense and PLEASE dig to the body a bit. Right hook to the body, left cross up top, right hook up top. If Chavez starts leaning in or reaching then use the uppercut! Andy has got some dangerous hands 20 KO's in 28 wins.

Lee brings a few attributes to the table in this fight that Chavez hasn't had to deal with yet in his career. (1) As Lyle mentioned, he's a southpaw. Junior has been kept away from southpaws. I assume purposefully because he hasn't faced a southpaw in about 5 years. Notably, in his recent little run, with wins over Manfredo, Zbik and the like, not one of the boxers were southpaws. Additionally, Arum turned down Lee as opponent in the past because he was a southpaw. (2) He has more world level experience than Junior. He was an Olympian and faced Gennady Golovkin, Alfredo Angulo and Hassan N'Jikam. In the professional ranks, he's been moved slowly, but he's still been in tougher than Junior. (3) At 27, he's the freshest of any Junior's recent opponents.

Junior's advantages are his brute strength, his size (corrolary of the strength) and his chin.

Lee's not hyper fast, but he's not slow. He's probably average on speed. He has enough pop to keep his opponents honest.

My initial thoughts are that Lee may be able to outbox Junior and Junior may be able to make Lee uncomfortable by crowding him and forcing the action. It's a good fight. What are the opening odds?

I think Chavez stops him late.

I could see Lee winning but he has to hurt Chavez IMO...JR will probably be a Cruiserweight in the ring come fight night. If he can't hurt him or at least get his respect...he'll be up a creek without a paddle

Lee has never once in his life faced a body assault like the ones Chavez gives out. I don't think he'll be up to it. Chavez by mid round stoppage after he forces the Puerto Ric..,I mean Irish fighter to quit in his corner.

Why the hell DiBella agreed to have this fight in Texas is beyond me. He better be on the commissions ass to make sure they do their drug testing, that they have a competent ref in the ring, and no Gale Van Hoy as a judge. He also better be on the WBC to make sure they also enforce prefight drug testing and the mandatory 30 day & 7 day weigh-ins.

The WBC? Otherwise known as the Mexican Mafia? With Sulaiman as the Godfather and Papa Chavez as Sonny? Fat chance. If Lee doesn't KTFO Chavez, he loses the fight. And THAT'S not even a sure thing.

Oh it will be over before Lee quits. The ref and judges, with Mexican pesos flowing out of their pockets, will stop the fight at the first Baby Chavez flurry.

I know, that's exactly why DiBella needs to keep on eye on them, and make sure things are done properly.
