it is much more likely to have originated with the largely Scottish and Irish settlers. Scottish Hill folk and Billie or literally "bloke" or possibly the protestant followers of King William who came from Ulster in Northern Ireland. There is very little evidence suggesting it has anything to do with German Immigrants. Are you from Kentucky or are you just offended on behalf of White Americans?
I'm offended b/c it is a racial slur; just like I'd be if you used one for any other group. Bigotry shouldn't be tolerated regardless of one's actual race, religion, ethnicity, group or sexual orientation.

A "redneck" is usually someone who's Southern white trash, an alcoholic who drives an old beat up pickup truck with a gun rack and a cab & bed full of empty beer cans. They chain smoke unfiltered cigs or marlboros, have several tattoos, including one of a rebel flag, their ex's name, or "mother" in the center of a heart. They claim to be a bad-ass and show you their missing teeth to prove it, although the truth is they've just never brushed them. The mother of some of his children is also his mother, and his "wife" is also his sister. Oh, and the back of his neck is sunburned red from doing manual labor in the hot southern sun. How that for a stereotype? Did I leave anything out?
Redneck, hick, white/trailer trash, hillbilly are all racial slurs, usually insults for white southern males, but it doesn't bother me being called that, because i'm none of those.
When you use hillbilly, redneck etc as a pejorative you are suggesting that someone (usually a white person) is ignorant, uneducated, backwards and so on. This is pretty much the same connotation when Nigger or any other racial slur is used as a pejorative. I am fully aware that Dia meant no such thing but that doesn't change what the word is. Maybe you don't find it offensive b/c you are in fact white and so is Dia (I think) but I personally don't differentiate between slurs regardless of the context or who they are referring to.

Surely calling somebody a Hillbilly or Redneck is just offensive, not a racial slur?
Surely a Hillbilly is a product of poverty and has nothing to do with race?
Gypsys/travellers in the UK are called Gypos or Pikeys and whilst these terms are considered derogatory I personally wouldn't say they were racist.
The term in the US is specific to white people and therefore racist.
