Default Ortiz forced to have 2nd surgery on jaw. Ring return further postponed.

Victor Ortiz, who suffered a broken jaw in his June 23 loss to Josesito Lopez, had a medical setback recently, undergoing a second surgery on the jaw about a week and a half ago.

Ortiz was recently seen at the Canelo Lopez fight on September 15, and it did seem like his jaw was still a bit too "noticeable," even to me, and I'm not a medical expert by any means. Apparently, the bones weren't aligning correctly, leading to a second surgery.

Ortiz's absence from the ring will be even longer due to this, and could be well into next year before he's able to get back into the gym and prepare for a fight, let alone actually fight.

Victor is also currently without trainer and manager, as Danny Garcia and Rolando Arellano are out of the picture. Recently, Floyd Mayweather Sr said he'd been contacted about possibly training Ortiz.

I wonder if all of those keyboard arm soldiers calling him a quitter would have fought on.. another quote from the ring side doc on fight night.

"it was very severe, internal bleeding, it’s very dangerous, Victor could bleed out.”

That is a serious injury and will impact on his ability to take a punch more psychologically than physically. He is young enough to come back and overall he is a good talker and likable guy. Hope he can get back.

I think had he not essentialy quit against Maidana nobody in their right mind would've questioned him calling it a day against Lopez, they weren't remotely similar. Reading that just confirms that he was in a really tough spot, he had already gone a couple of rounds with the injury and wasn't taking much further damage so he must've really felt that it was dangerous to continue.

I like Ortiz, he's in good fights and is physically a beast, but with his mentality he'd better hope that the jaw will heal completely. That's a nasty sign if it still doesn't look normal, it's easy to aggravate that kind of facial damage again no matter how successful the surgery.

He made the right decision to not carry on fighting in his last fight, it took a strong man to make that decision because pride would say carry on and that would have been worse.

Agreed! If he had tried to carry on that might have been his last fight, any bone can be repaired if the damage isn't too bad.
Everybody has their own pain level, so if a fighter quits, I don't second guess them.

Yeah I don't hate on Ortiz for quitting this fight. The Maidana one, I get the criticism but gotta give the fighter the benefit of the doubt and as it proves, this was a pretty screwed up injury. The Maidana one he absolutely crucified himself in the post fight interview though.

I still want to see him vs Khan. Two undisciplined but skilled fighters who will go to war despite it not being in their best interests. That would be a tear up while it lasted.

Ortiz and Khan would be very well matched if Khan had anything but bone china in his jaw, but Ortiz would only have to land something half decent and the fight is over. Khan isn't about to handle him without getting tagged. I guess there's always the chance that Ortiz doesn't heal up properly though.
