    Default Joe Mesi...

Tell me about this guy? Any good? Never really followed his career!

He got a lot out of a little amount of talent. He had good power with both hands, his style of fighting lead him to fade late in fights. He didn't have all that great of defense or a jab, but he was rugged and awkward and a hard worker in the ring. I never thought he was a world beater" but he could have given Valuev trouble and maybe won a title that way.

I feel bad for the guy because he had the brain bleed that cut his career short, but IMO he reached his peak without losing a match. He fought Monte Barrett hard and the fight vs Jirov was a good one. The guy had a lot of heart. If he was in his prime at this point in the division I say he would hang with Povetkin, probably win a decision vs Chagaev, KO Dimitrenko, and get hammered by Arreola & Stiverne if that gives you an idea of his level.

    Cheers.

Can't find the barret fight, was it controversial? Was the Jirov fight at HW?

A few folks thought it was controversial, I think Mesi won enough of the early rounds to deserve the win, but the ending was nice. The Jirov fight was at heavyweight and marked Jirov's ONLY real successful heavyweight fight, the weight just didn't suit him.

I will say this about Joe Mesi, he usually had fun fights to watch. I really wished he could have tested himself vs some better heavyweights though.

Thank's for the replies EK. Feel's pretty darn miserable posting today though. Put's petty squabble's into perspective anyway.

    RIP Emanuel.

Like Lyle said Mesi went about as far as his talent could take him.

Pretty good fighter, lower eschelon top ten at his peak. I honestly thought Monte Barrett was robbed against him myself.

Mesi's biggest win was arguably his 1st round KO of Davarryl Williamson, or at least his most impressive.

He was like a poor man's version of Tommy Morrison.
"You knocked him down...now how bout you try knockin me down ?"

He never really struggled like Morrison, he never slept on an opponent like Tommy did. Joe Mesi was a very clever fighter as well, not in his style, but he knew when to go for the KO and when to just get work done. He always STARTED to gas out late, but never gassed like Morrison or Wlad or whomever else who has punched themselves out, he never paid the price for losing steam late in fights.

I would like Baby Joe to do some comentating or training, he's a heady guy.

Mesi was a really good, solid HW. Was always a fan of the guy, and it's good to hear he seems to have moved on with his life successfully.

I would pick him over Arreola (or even Morrison, for that matter).

With his style, he would have gotten slaughtered by either Klitschko or Lennox, but I think that goes without saying.

His career was ruined from a rabbit shot from Vassily Jirov.

He and Brock were along the same lines...

Would have liked to see them fight each other.

I still think Mesi vs Guinn would have been fun

Ill be honest I've always thought Jirov got a bad rap for that and I attribute his situation to a lean into the fire style with an absent defence. Joe looked gassed bad at the very start of 8th and was getting touched with many wide hooks here, stunned in the 5th. I thought Jirov nicked that fight with the 3 late knockdowns and actually boxing better than the hbo team cared to notice who were very biased and way ahead of themselves suggesting a fight with Tyson too.

Mesi was a good fighter who maximized what he had greatly. He mixed it up too much and wore the heart on his sleeve and had a really good run of beating some names and also rans. He was top notch on a mic too and always thought he would fit into any blow by blow team you can think of. Sharp as they came.

I disagree with you bro from my memory, Mesi was totally outboxing Jirov and was messing up his face. When Jirov landed that rabbit shot you could see it in Mesi's face, he didn't recover from that shot. and after that he was totally gone but managed to hang on and win the fight by 1 point if i remember rightly

I did like Jirov as a fighter though he was total warrior with some menacing body shots.

Thats fair enough. Mesi did show some patience and good adjustment. I just saw Jirov experience show up and Joe was really taking alot of leather in last two fight. It was a helluva fight. Mesi was a down to earth no frills guy. Just ring the bell and let's go. Refreshing really.
