It seems it is not only fans who can be accused of using hyperbole where Golovkin is concerned.
Matthew Macklin: Gennady Golovkin is heir to Floyd Mayweather's pound-for-pound throne | Latest | Boxing News
"He’s very clever, he’s relaxed, his timing’s excellent. It was a big ring and it felt like a telephone box. “There’s always things you’d do different. I’m not going to take away from his win. It was a great win, he caught me with a good shot and he was winning the fight anyway. If I’d fought him differently I think it might have been a different fight, you don’t like to say this as a fighter, but the outcome might not have been any different. He’d have beaten me anyway. He’s top, top draw.”
Macklin remains convinced that he is world class but now eyes other champions, like Peter Quillin, Daniel Geale or even Sergio Martinez, in his quest for that elusive title. “Golovkin I think he’s above world class. I think he’s heir to Mayweather. I think he’s pound-for-pound one or two. That’s where he’s going. I think he’ll probably prove that over the next 12 months, if people fight him,” said Macklin.
