    Default Olivares vs Arguello

Arguello wins his first title, and wins it from one of the very best.

It was looking like Olivares had him, then Arguello got him. I rank Olivares very highly, Arguello less so because he always had a big height advantage.

It was a good win but Olivares was fighting above his best division with physical disadvantages..

Speaking of Olivares, I know he was regarded as the best fighter in Mexico before chavez came along but tbh, I dont see why he's rated so high by the old timers....

Personally, he's not in my top 5 when ranking the best fighters out of Mexico..

Wins over Bobby Chacon, Jesus Pimentel, Chucho Castillo, Jose Luis Ramirez, Takao Sakurai and Lionel Rose are why he's rated so highly

When I look at him, I see where Ricardo Lopez came from. The way he controlled distance, moved in, out, picked his spots. Keep in mind, Lopez also was much taller than almost everyone he fought. Olivares was shorter than most but was fighting that way.

Grey and VD, tbh, Olivares was way before my time and he's one of the few Mexican fighters who I havent studied extensively. I havent watched all of his fights but just by the eyeball test, I didnt think he's technically great as the likes of Marquez, lopez, and Morales..

I assume that you guys know more about him than I do though.. Olivares career set should be next on my buy list cuz im always hearing about how great he is from the older generations..

When you see olivares fight lionel Rose, that is as close to unbeatable as a guy can get. My good friend- himself an ex pro, and a guy that sparred hundreds of rounds with Emile Griffith and also with Clyde gray (no relation)- thought lionel Rose was a real top guy and he was there that night. He says, to see how good olivares is, check his record. A ton of tough guys.
years ago, I got into an olivares trip. I grew up watching him, but i went and bought tapes of him, from back in his career. When he got to the top, he enjoyed it, he never missed a party and he fought at a very high level for a long time. When he was young and hungry, he was something. Later on, he was smart. You can see it in any of his fights, the way he sets up punches, even if he doesn't move as well..
Last, for some perspective, find posts from kikibalt elsewhere on the web. That is Mr Frank Baltazar, father of the Baltazar brothers (most notably frankie and Tony) and a fixture in LA boxing since the 1940s. He can give you perspective on the quality of guys Olivares fought, thought he thought manuel ortiz was better.
