I love the sound of the connects on these old clips. Old horse hair 4 and 6 ounce mitts that sound like leather contacting leather lol. The thuds are so raw. And those detached thumbs. Packey turned his thumbs in but Gibbons lead looked like a Velociraptor claw at times. Its amazing that he was not known as a thumber like Norfolk or Roper who most likely blinded Greb.

    Good stuff.

Norfolk got Greb, in their first fight. Have you seen some of those pictures of Pep? He was slick that way too.

Many believe it was Roper in the third fight to be the final nail. Greb did not go to the doctor after Norfolk but the day after the third Roper fight he was seen with eye patches. Greb was already thought to have a retinal tear in his right eye via Norfolk and its believed that Roper thumbed him repeatedly causing a complete detachment. In those days they did not differentiate between a tear and detachment so the doctor entered Norfolk as the reason for his blindness at the time of his death.
Either way he fought blind in one eye for the last couple of years and was thumbed by others like Walker etc until the end.

I often think of Langford when this topic arises. He fought blind in both eyes at the end of his career.

You need to buy that Harry Greb book. $50 well spent, I can assure you. You and I like those old fighters and this is either the first or second best one I have read. (I read a Charley Burley book years ago that was very good.)

I have a rare copy of Fairs book along with Paxtons and Comptons. I've been unable to acquire Cohns book.

I hope history repeats itself and I find myself in the roaring 20's
