    Default Psychological Greats

Muhammad Ali is often credited for his intellect in the ring and ability to use psychological warfare to beat opponents before the first bell ever rang. Sonny Liston was reportedly convinced that Ali was certifiably insane and this unnerved Sonny prior to their fight.

The psychological attack aspect interests me, and on my opinion Bernard Hopkins has managed to take this tactic to a new level. I love watching Hop manipulate the opponent prior to and during his fights. Remember his throwing of the flag, tossing rice and beans as a last meal, and comments of an old school street fight prior to his domination of Tito. Everyone. Including an enraged Tito, was looking for Hop to come out swinging and make it an ugly mugging. Then the bell rang and Hop jabbed and circled and you could see the look if confusion in Titos face.

In the rematch vs Pascal, Hop talked excessively about Pascal running out of gas and not being able to fight hard for 12 rounds. You could see that mess with Pascals mind and he seemed to exhaust himself from worrying so much about exhausting himself.

Where I see Hop taking it to the next level, is that he doesn't just reserve the mind games for the opponent. He uses them on officials also. He made a huge stink about the ref for the Tito fight and called I to question his ability to officiate a Hop fight in an unbiased manner. Hop often uses these tactics when he wants a little "leeway" with the rules. It often works for him, as the ref tends to go easier on Hop and let some of his borderline infractions go without even a warning.

Additionally, prior to the Pascal rematch Hop was very vocal about the judges getting their draw wrong, and how they missed out on being a part of a historical event. This helped with the rematch in that those judges didn't want to be called out publicly or miss out on being a part if history and rewarded Hop with pretty much every close round.

Floyd Mayweather recently showed similar intelligence by harping on Maidanas rougher tactics. This led to Kenny Bayless being overly officious in the rematch which prevented Maidana from using the tactics that worked so well for him in the first fight. Thoughts?

I agree with them and also think guys like Tyson, Foreman and Liston deserve mention for the subtle art of intimidation. Liston was great at it and Foreman patterned himself off of Liston.

And for a guy like Tyson to dress in all black, come to the ring with just a cut towel over his head, his looks, ect had people intimidated almost as much as his power. When you have a great champ like Michael Spinks talking about how he fears for his health and safety going into a fight with you, you know you got into his head and he's beat already.

    Not Really

Cassius Clay was certifiable 'Nuts', but Charles 'Sonny' Liston was not in the least bit intimidated by him.

95% of that stuff was 'choreographed' for the Press.

Larry Holmes definitely 'psyched out' Muhammad Ali before their match. Muhammad knew he that was going
to get a beating, and he knew that there was no way in Hell that he was going to win a 'single' Round, let alone beat Larry.

I've always enjoyed Ricardo El Matador Mayorga's pre-fight antics and psychological warfare... 'cept he takes a good @$$-whupping at the fight though...

Ali was the master and got to Sonny and George although I do not think it worked with Joe and probably made him fight harder.

Hopkins is clever, Oscar said he was nice and pleasant to him during the tour for their match because he did not want to face an angry Oscar (not that it owuld have made a difference). Also remember hopkins unified against Keith Holmes and said he would knock him out and Holmes was so concerned about getting stopped that he lost the fight. His tactics to rile Joe Calzaghe did not work.

SUnny had many problems with family, moobs, his inner self. This is why actually Ali managed to get into his head. When people are restfull and relaxed, no pressure like money and stuff, nobody would be able to bully you.

    Larry Holmes

The way he completely psyched out Muhammad Ali was brilliant.

You could see Larry's 'Brain Power' drain everything out of Muhammad at Center-Ring during
    introductions.

The fight was 'over' before it got started.

    ??

You cannot psych out a brainless person. Ali was completely shot by the time they fought

    NV,

Muhammad Ali was strong-willed in The Ring.

Until he met Mr. Larry Holmes who dissected him mentally.

Muhammad knew that he was facing his 1st complete fighter in his career, and that tore apart Muhammad's brain.

I always thought of Mayorga as a clown, his antics were so transparent.

    Master

If you are blind, I can understand not 'seeing' the devastating mind game that Larry
    dished on Muhammad.

After that bout, everyone turned their back on Muhammad and felt sorry for him.

Pity is the worst type of 'psychological pain'.
