All you ever hear about that fight is how Floyd missed weight, and how JMM had to jump two divisions to fight him. It's true that Floyd was unprofessional and missed weight, but to say the fight never meant anything or has no credibility is unfair.
1) Putting aside semantics over who jumped how many weight classes and who didn't make weight, the size difference really wasn't all that significant. Marquez weighed in at 142 and came into the fight at 148. Mayweather refused to get on the scale to give an unofficial weight, but let's look at what Mayweather has historically weighed in at on fight night.
Vs Sharmba Mitchell: 148lbs
Vs Judah: 146lbs
Vs Baldomir: 149lbs
Vs Ortiz: 150lbs
So in reality, in all probability, both men stepped into the ring within a few pounds of each other.
To put that into context, when Floyd fought Baldomir (a fight people regard as a joke and meaning nothing), Floyd came into the ring at 149, Baldomir came in at 162. When Floyd fought Canelo (another fight people seem to give little credit or none at all to Floyd for), Floyd came into the fight at 150 even, while Canelo came in at 165.
So if we're going to completely discount JMM's chances against Floyd because of a (probable) couple pounds of weight advantage Floyd had, shouldn't we be worshipping Floyd as god's gift to boxing for beating a guy with a functional 15lb weight advantage on him?
2. Rougly the same sized JMM that was dominated by Floyd at WW, managed to KTFO Pac at WW.
JMM was more lean against Pac for sure, but was it really that big of a change?
Against Floyd, JMM weighed in at 142 and came to the ring at 148.
Against Pac (where he won by KO), he weighed in at 143 and came to the ring at 150.
^He was more cut when he fought Pac for sure, but is it really that much of a difference?
