Default Why wasn't Floyd's win over JMM impressive?

All you ever hear about that fight is how Floyd missed weight, and how JMM had to jump two divisions to fight him. It's true that Floyd was unprofessional and missed weight, but to say the fight never meant anything or has no credibility is unfair.

    1) Putting aside semantics over who jumped how many weight classes and who didn't make weight, the size difference really wasn't all that significant. Marquez weighed in at 142 and came into the fight at 148. Mayweather refused to get on the scale to give an unofficial weight, but let's look at what Mayweather has historically weighed in at on fight night.

    Vs Sharmba Mitchell: 148lbs
    Vs Judah: 146lbs
    Vs Baldomir: 149lbs
    Vs Ortiz: 150lbs

So in reality, in all probability, both men stepped into the ring within a few pounds of each other.

To put that into context, when Floyd fought Baldomir (a fight people regard as a joke and meaning nothing), Floyd came into the ring at 149, Baldomir came in at 162. When Floyd fought Canelo (another fight people seem to give little credit or none at all to Floyd for), Floyd came into the fight at 150 even, while Canelo came in at 165.

So if we're going to completely discount JMM's chances against Floyd because of a (probable) couple pounds of weight advantage Floyd had, shouldn't we be worshipping Floyd as god's gift to boxing for beating a guy with a functional 15lb weight advantage on him?

    2. Rougly the same sized JMM that was dominated by Floyd at WW, managed to KTFO Pac at WW.

JMM was more lean against Pac for sure, but was it really that big of a change?

Against Floyd, JMM weighed in at 142 and came to the ring at 148.

Against Pac (where he won by KO), he weighed in at 143 and came to the ring at 150.

^He was more cut when he fought Pac for sure, but is it really that much of a difference?

Floyd was bare foot in that picture Marquez had trainers on. (just saying like)

Lightweight to welter-catchweight to lightweight for a few years. Never weighed in close to the welter limit. Come on, that was a shit match-up. To Floyd's credit, he showed how easy he could deal with a fellow great fighter when holding the size advantage.

Marquez's style can't handle the outside boxer. Marquez was bloated at 142 adding to his lack of speed. Marquez is perfect for Mayweather.

I dont know why you always post pictures of the weigh in as it doesn't matter what they looked like that day seeing at they don't fight that day.

Look at Marquez body during the fight and you can see the difference in how he handled the weight

There is no way you can make any case and say that it doesn't make a difference. If a fighter just cuts less weight then he will be slow and groggy. And it's obvious that's how Marquez did it the first time even he said he didn't feel as fast. Now what would have happened if when Floyd fought Canelo at 152 and Canelo wouldn't have come in at the agreed weight I'm sure he would have made a scene and threaten to cancel the fight.

Because it appeared he was beating up a smaller guy when his other contemporaries were available to fight, like Paul Williams, Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito at 147, and Vernon Forrest and Sergio Martinez at 154.

First, it'll always rub people the wrong way when Floyd contracted to fight him at 145 and then didn't cut down to 145 for the fight.

Second, this was Marquez's first foray above 135. In fact, he had only two fights at 135 before the Floyd fight. Prior to facing Floyd, he faced Juan Diaz at 135. He hadn't even fought at 140 yet. So, Floyd made him jump up two divisions to face the p4p best fighter in the world, who then refused to lose the last two pounds per the contract.

Third, after he fought Floyd, he returned to 135. He then had two fights at 135 before moving back up (Kastidis and Diaz). Clearly, he hadn't grown into welterweight yet, let alone junior welterweight, and still felt more comfortable at 135 than at 147.

Fourth, he had struggled with Juan Diaz at 135 in his previous fight. A guy who struggled with Juan Diaz at lightweight was not going to cause Floyd any problems at 147, especially when Floyd didn't make the contracted weight.

Basically, no one gave Marquez a shot at dethroning Floyd because he he had jumped up two weight divisions to face him, had never fought at 147 before, had struggled in his last fight, and Floyd didn't even bother to make the contracted weight for the fight.

I hope that explains why the win wasn't very impressive.

With that said, even with the circumstances in which Floyd faced him, it's still impressive to totally shut Marquez down.

Because it was not impressive JMM had never fought at the weight before. Floyd was contracted to come in at the weight limit which he could not be bothered to make. Floyd was a disgrace.

    Floyd is the boss..lol

Sorry, but if it was oscar or pacman it wouldnt have even be discussed.
    (Only by me!)

Saying that, im not justifying floyds behaviour but every opponent he faced since he beat oscar has the best payday of their lifes and must accept they will always be the b side.

As far as the actual fight I don't see how anyone couldn't say Floyd looked great, it's not as if Marquez just forgot how to box on that night, nobody has ever handled him like that. Then again nobody ever brought him up 2 weight classes at 35 and didn't even make the weight themselves, it was a pretty bitch move.

I think if anything it's made less a deal of because Floyd came up from the lighter weights himself, isn't a puncher, and nobody really believes the weight would have changed the outcome at all. If the exact same thing happened in another fight though, where a natural welter dragged a guy up, missed weight then went on to win by KO, he'd be seen as a Margarito type guy for a while. Marquez took the fight for the payday, couldn't have been that confident he'd carry the weight himself and obviously didn't have many options when Floyd didn't bother to make it. He was so outgunned to begin with, that kind of sours the fight imo.

Because Marquez was a lightweight and Mayweathers farcical conduct with the weight, last minute backroom contract changes and refusing the scale was unprofessional and very shady. The event was strictly about Mayweather short cutting his way back into the "p4p" ranks after he opted to sit on the sidelines, the only ranking that mattered to him.

Marquez definitely made a poor decision to move so high up in weight so quickly. He must have done it for the money. Guaranteed $3.2 million. I imagine it was a career high payday for him (up to that point in his career).

Marquez only got $5 million for the Pacquiao 4 fight.

"Juan Gomez stated JMM felt comfortable at 142, and that even if Floyd's weight does go up - he'll have an edge by being lighter and faster.

Beristein stated Floyd was the fastest fighter they ever faced- over Pac. Did he complain afterward?

PBF also catchweighted Canelo- but tripped out part was Alvarez rehydrated to 165 on fight night while Mayweather lost a half-pound from the weigh-in.

Now I compare the two- Pac fights Margarito @ catchweight , but Rito blew up & most fans talk about how Pac fought this (massive ) guy..the same ones that forgot , so, too PBF.

Different was PBF did it against a MW undefeated, young & strong Canelo.

So IMO I go with Beristein & Gomez. Floyd would've whooped his azz anyway they weighed. And once again JMM didn't complain about it, so why should I?

It was impressive but tainted. Even with the circumstances, JMM was the #1b p4p and got completely shut out. The main problem is that even if this fight were to be made under more favorable circumstances for JMM, the outcome would have been about the exact same.
