Thread: Should a fighter ever be referred to as a bum or tomato can?

Meh I have no problem with it, but I think those terms get thrown around way too much (can't count how many times have I seen them used in reference to a world ranked, top 10 guy).

The words - although harsh - do have an accepted use and meaning in the sport. I don't have respect for every guy that steps into the ring: doesn't necessarily mean you're brave, you might just be stupid.

Of course some fighters are bums or tomato cans. They need to be called that. Some guys should not ever enter fighting, and it isn't because they have a fighting spirit or not, but some guys really do not qualify for being in sports period.

Rod Salka- a BUM and a Tomato Can

Andrew Golota- had promise but on many occasions was "bummy" in his approach.

Mike Alvarado- yes, he can fight. But, he is a BUM. Drug abusing BUM. Get your life together homes!!

Riddick Bowe- a Champion, but in all due respect, at the latter half of his career, became nothing more than a lousy, lazy, fat assed bum. The sanctioning organizations should have been ashamed to know he was their champion holding their belt.

Some times being a bum has nothing to do with fighting ability, it has to do with the lifestyle you choose that causes you to lose focus and enter into the ring in shit shape and giving piss poor performances with no direction in your career. That makes you a bum.

Arturo Gatti- a strong fighter who came to fight and came prepared to win, he just didn't have it when faced with elite fighters. He was not a bum.

Emmanuel Augustus- good, technical fighter that got robbed more than he won. Came prepared, in shape and with focus on the task at hand. He was no bum, he just got shitty ends of the deal.

Rod Salka is not a bum. He's a lightweight and is coming off probably his most impressive display of boxing. Mike Alvarado is a drug addict who prior showed he could adapt his style to win.

No way could I even think of Calling Golota a bum. Bipolar maybe.
Bowe: After 3 fights with Evander he was the one that ended up slurred speech. That trilogy took everything from him- and was a shell by Golota II IMO.

I am totally disagreeing with this. ykdad:- check out Hakkar-- he is in such great shape - the announcers 1st few rounds claimed he could run 3miles & break a record. This post is in humor, so check out how a guy can be in great shape, but his styleskill level is bummified.

That any man or woman that had the 'balls' or 'heart' to get into a Ring to
exchange punches with another person, would have some kind of courage.

While it may not be a 'true bum', they sure were dog-like efforts.
