Default Emile Griffith vs Luis Rodriguez First Fight

Previously, some time ago, I posted their third or fourth fight. Good action, great skill. Good cornerman match-up as well, with Angelo Dundee in the Rodriguez corner and Gil Clancy across the ring. Some really good moves on the the part of both fighters.

Luis Rodriguez looks technically very good and must be the Cuban schooling. They look very big for welterweights.

they have a move in that cuban system that they named el paso pendulo. you push off of your back foot to transfer your body weight over to your front foot and then you push off of your front foot to transfer your body weight back over to your back foot and you repeat like a pendulum.

    heres teofilo stevenson doing it

i think the neat thing about it is that you throw your jab with it in the same motion and therefore every time you do it you are feinting a jab. you do it a lot and jab or no jab you force a guy to treat it just like a jab. thats pretty tricky.

the advantage of pushing off of your back foot is you can adjust just how hard you want to push off of it to change how long or short you want your jab. you can push off hard and throw long or you can push off weak and throw short.

you force a guy to guess what kind of jab you are going to throw, a long jab or a short jab, every time you push off of your back foot. thats a mean thing to do to a counter puncher because a short jab doesnt pass through into slip space like a long jab does and you force a counter puncher to guess what he can counter and what he cant. thats not very fair. you already know what youre going to throw. he doesnt.

the advantage of pushing off of your front foot is that you can push off of it to suddenly move back and away from punches. thats what makes guys that fight from a front foot pivot hard to hit. it gives you the ability to bail out in a hurry when you are in danger.
