Default James Kirkland returns this fall

Miguel Cotto vs. James Kirkland Showdown in Play? - Boxing News

Cotto contacted for a Kirkland return. Is James damaged goods? Can Ann Wolfe make a difference?
David Lemiuex has been mentioned also.

Way too much power in David hands. .too much skill in Cotto?

Yes, no, yes, and yes would be my two cents. He'll never be a bad tune up option or terribly boring because he only knows how to bum rush guys, but he'd be stopped in either of those fights almost for sure. He's even more of a frontrunner than Lemiuex and worse overall, and wouldn't have anything much for Cotto.

Agree with p4pking. I think you could give him a smart phone and a map and it would take him till the fall just to find his way to the venue. The knockouts have not been kind to Kirkland. Remember the last time they put a mic in front of him... Yeesh. Which is of course why Cottos picking him. As much damage as Cotto has taken over the years. He can still jab and counter his way to a early round Ko victory over kirkland in his sleep.

He stands a better chance of rubio'ing Lemiux but would probably take his chances on the punch from cotto (especially as it pays more). I think Kirkland needs buy stake in a gym or grab some headgear for very light sparring.. the road his headed down is not good for him.

As for his reunion with Wolfe. You can't coach out brain damage... "It's going to be reunited like 'Peaches and Herb.'" - Peaches and 'Creamed' is more like it.

Isn't JMM fighting again to set up a Cotto fight?

Put Kirkland in with little JMM at 154 n you might have a fight lol

Kirkland is a warrior and intimidating figure for journeymen, fringe contenders, and all but blue chip prospects.

However, he is a Mayorga type tune up showcase fight for world class guys like Cotto. Truthfully, not as good or durable as Mayorga was during his stretch of getting stretched by the stars.

Sounds harsh but for a guy with only 2 losses, Kirkland is a punching bag with a single win over the last 4+ years. He needs to be watched. The thing that kept Mayorga in repeated big cash 'tune ups' was his durability coupled with some limitation. Guys painted portraits on a marketable tough guy who was also champion. Kirkland on the other hand is all immediate threat with a weak public defenders defense and who short circuits badly. If Cotto just wants a W and to pocket money...shocker...than it works but overall it's an empty fight for a guy who is nearing the end and could go off much much bigger.

For some reason I would've sworn he had more than 2 losses, of course he only has as many decent wins, but it seems like he's been an opponent type for a while now. Seem to remember he was well behind in the Molina fight? Not sure I even saw that one. In the last 4 years all he's done is beat Glen Tapia and get flattened by Canelo, put it that way. Hardly has the style to afford that kind of inactivity.

I think most people remember him having more two. Probably because most people remember seeing angulo batter him before sitting in the pocket where Kirkland caught him and made him pay. The shock loss to the Japanese kid showed a Kirkland who gave up on himself. Then he lost in court a few times..I think it seems like so many times because each loss was quite memorable and ugly with Kirkland floundering on the mat or crumpled in a heap bleeding from his mouth.

I think they guys got more to lose than gain. Even if he makes a mil on the fight, which I doubt he will. He's already seeing Pokémon without a smart phone, if you catch my drift. There should really be a commission that enforces a cognitive standard test or keeps track of a decline though repetitive test results.

    Clever Pokemon analogy there.

Kirkland was never articulate from jump street, not sure he is slurring.
As for his Angulo win- El Pero had the first round 2 minutes. Kirkland whooped his ass from then on.

I think Lemiuex would blast him out, but Cotto could return to his viscous body attack to wear down Kirkland. ---Then again, Kirk more than likely would re hyrdate and use that weight gain to his advantage.
