    Default Andrew Golota nearly died...

... during his fight against Mike Tyson. He had a herniated disk in his neck, a crushed cheekbone and bleeding on the brain. Had he gone one more round he may have been in serious trouble, or maybe have died in the ring.

Crazy to think you can knock a guy out that severely and have it over turned to NC just because poor Mike puffed a lil reefer before the fight. On a side note they had such similarity in the fouling department . From repeated biting, nut shots and attempted arm breaks.

honestly though, I'd pay to have them in the division today

Remembering it from back in the day - I thought Golota got back into the fight in the second round and couldn't believe he quit. His corner going ballistic trying to force the gum shield in and stuff made it worse. Then I remember sticking up for him when he was getting pelted by bottles and glasses, one hit a cut spraying blood all over his chest.

Then you learn he was practically knocked over by a bus. Oh...

The size disparity was stark but Tyson landed those bombs particularly the right hands.

Golota knew he was hurt and I did read somewhere that he did have a serious injury from the blows but I did not realise it was that serious.

Golota nearly died that night. It's funny how we talk about it soooooo lightly. But the man nearly died, and that is sad. The people wanted blood, but he could have died. He came sooooooooo close.

I remember how that fight labelled him an instant quitter for such a long time. If people would have known that back then.

Me, I don't believe it for one second. A brain bleed would have ended his career in the US for all practical purposes.

I felt sick too as I also thought he was a coward that night. You raise a good point that the injuries could have been exaggerated to save face.

Where's the proof that he had bleeding on the brain?
I highly doubt that is true. Mike landed one big overhand right
But Lewis gave Golota a worse beating to be honest.

It's pure bullshite. Ferdie has always been a purveyor of bullshite.

I thought what was reported back in the day was a broken orbital bone.

I don't doubt the vertebrae and damaged cheek bone but only thing I've seen on bleeding was his Doctor with almost a throw away line..'he may have had some bleeding in the brain, and it does look like that was the case'. Just sounds fishy but no idea why they'd exaggerate it, unless they were trying to free up his purse that Showtime held up for a while because he "quit". Golota and his people even knocked around suing Al Certo as trainer, refusing to pay him because of how he treated Golota and the tirade he unleashed on Golota after refusing to come out corner.
