Carl Frampton: Frank Warren tips featherweight for 'very big' summer fight

Carl Frampton is likely to be involved in a "very, very big fight" in early summer, says promoter Frank Warren.

The 31-year-old Belfast featherweight has indicated he will continue his career in the ring after speculation he may retire.

World title holders Leo Santa Cruz and Oscar Valdez have both expressed interest in fighting Frampton.

He has already stated he will not fight before his court case with former promoter Barry McGuigan has concluded.

That case is set for May, with Warren suggesting Frampton could return to the ring at "the end of May, (or) early June".

WBA champion Santa Cruz name-checked Frampton as a potential 2019 opponent on Saturday after successfully defending his belt against Rafael Rivera.

"I want to fight any of the champions at featherweight or have a third fight with Carl Frampton," said the 30-year-old.

"I want to be back this summer and fight three times this year against the best in the division."

Frampton has continually voiced his desire for a third fight with Santa Cruz having won the first but lost the second bout against the Mexican.

On Monday, Warren also discussed the possibility of a potential rematch with Josh Warrington, who beat Frampton in Manchester in December and will defend the title he retained in that clash against mandatory challenger Kid Galahad.

"The ideal world would be for Carl to go out and win a title and then make a unification fight," he said.

"Providing the two guys keep winning, I'm quite sure we could do that.

"If we can make a rematch, we will see, it's there to be seen."

This seems to gone under the radar.

Carl Frampton: Belfast featherweight signs fight deal with Top rank

Former two-weight world champion Carl Frampton has signed a multi-fight deal with promoters Top Rank.

The Belfast featherweight and Frank Warren's Queensberry Promotions agreed the "pact" with Top Rank to show his fights on ESPN platforms in the US.

"It's an honour for me to be teaming up with Top Rank for what will be the last chapter of my career," said Frampton.

"It also makes a fight, at some point in the future, with WBO champion Oscar Valdez a real possibility."

Frampton missed out on the IBF featherweight world title when was beaten by champion Josh Warrington in his last fight in December.

He added: "My goal, at this stage of my career, is still to become a world champion, and I feel I'll reach my goal with MTK and Bob Arum's Top Rank in my corner."

Top Rank, MTK Global and Queensberry Promotions stated that they will announce Frampton's next fight shortly.

World title holders Leo Santa Cruz and Valdez have both expressed interest in fighting the 32-year-old.

Frampton has already stated he will not fight before his court case with former promoter Barry McGuigan has concluded.

That case is set for May, with Warren suggesting last month Frampton could return to the ring at "the end of May, [or] early June".

"It's wonderful news that Carl Frampton has joined us at Top Rank," said chairman Arum.

"He is the epitome of a true warrior, and we are proud to be promoting him as he works toward becoming the featherweight champion of the world once again."

Good to see Top rank logging some fighters other than Fury . Frampton v Valdez would be a barn burner! Basically any order of 126 title holders would be very solid matches.

Frampton is a decent fighter but he does get more breaks than the average.

Good fight. Frampton is a live underdog in this match. Valdez should win pretty easily though

Carl Frampton: Bob Arum confirms The Jackal’s return and plan for next two fights

Carl Frampton is being lined up to return to the ring in August in the United States.

After considering retirement following December’s shock defeat by Josh Warrington, the Northern Irishman was preparing to fight earlier this summer but the adjournment of his court case with former manager Barry McGuigan means that date will be delayed.

The 32-year-old signed with influential US promoters Top Rank in March and was set to be rewarded by challenging Oscar Valdez. The WBO featherweight champion is instead fighting on June 8, but Frampton’s legal matters mean that he cannot be ready.

He will therefore not fight for a world title until the winter, by which time one compatriot in Ryan Burnett is expected to have fought dangerous WBO champion Zolani Tete, and another in Michael Conlan will hope to have avenged his controversial defeat by Vladimir Nikitin at Rio 2016.

“Frampton is fighting in August in the US, and then he’ll fight for a championship in probably November, December,” revealed Top Rank promoter Bob Arum.

“He was going to fight on August 3 but then that date went to Michael Conlan. I’m going to Belfast, where Conlan will fight. Later on in August, maybe the 10th or the 23rd, he’ll be fighting. He’ll be top of the bill.

“Ryan Burnett, Frank (Warren, Tete’s promoter) mentioned, we were going to put him on in Belfast but now it’s going to be in the United States.

“He has Tete he’d like to put Burnett in with. I’d love to do that fight.

“We have absolutely no compunction to show fights in the afternoon in the United States, so that they can be in the evening in the UK.”

Warren, who has developed a close relationship with Arum through their co-promotional agreements with Tyson Fury and Frampton, added: “I’d love to do that fight. Zolani would love to do that fight.

“That’s why he went into that tournament (the WBSS, which Burnett withdrew from through injury). That’s a great fight for Tete; I fancy my man.”

Frampton is suing McGuigan, his wife Sandra McGuigan and Cyclone Promotions (UK) Ltd, claiming purse money and other earnings due to him were withheld.

He is also facing an action from his former promoters, who he split with in 2017, for alleged breach of contract.

Lawyers representing the McGuigans have insisted that all of the allegations are categorically denied.
