Simple Pleasures

Posted 03-31-2008 at 04:41 AM by miles
Life in Korea is okay, you know. Its very different to back home in the UK but a place is really just a place. I spend much of my time either working or else at home. Within the home and with the curtains closed it isnt really Korea at all. Its Milesville. BBC on the TV, internet hooked up to familiar places like this, British Sea Power on the stereo, Shakespeare and Wilde on the bookshelves. Home comforts, simple pleasures that make living away in what may be percieved as a strange place so much easier to bear. Of course there are things that are missed. Good lifelong friends and family spring to mind. I miss not being able to just go down to the local and order a beer.

Food has been a bane of my life for a long time though. Im a picky eater at the best of times and the Korean diet has always been too out there for me. A lot of English food was always too out there too, so that is no real slur upon the Korean culinary tastes. The Korean supermarkets are seriously lacking in anything that catches my eye. However, a few weeks ago I discovered an online shopping service that shipped out to even distant lands like this one. I spent a fortune in shipping fees. But I am now able to drink English tea! Its delightful to just sit down with a hot brew and do a bit of study. Crisps and chocolates from the UK are unmatchable and Ive been indulging a lot as it has been so long since this stuff has been available to me. I even ordered jars of Chicken tikka masala sauce, tins of Big Soup and a Fray Bentos pie!! In total I imported about 40kg of homeland food. Cost a fortune but I am stocked up through the long hot summer and have over 1100 tea bags to enjoy!!

Seriously, the pleasure in life lies in the simple things.

Glad your still getting a taste of home life Miles.

By the way mate I've always wondered what exactly you were doing in Korea?

Next time you get a spare moment can you give us a biography?

I want to know why you moved to Korea, how long you've been there, what you do there, how long youo plan to remain there, who are you are there with etc.

If you're a social soul put up some pics of your pad as well. I'm really curious to see what houses and the neighbourhoods are like in Korea.

I'm imagining a cross between China and Tibet, i.e bikes everywhere, millions of little people, with no facial hair and glasses walking around in suits, massive high rise buildings but as its not China more rural.

I don't know how you could have all the above and be rural but that's my brain for you

Actually, some of those questions are a good catalyst for coming up with another blog posting. Will try and put something up later on.

How do I use the smiley icons on these pages? I dont see them anywhere.
