Indy was a let down

Posted 05-31-2008 at 04:54 PM by miles
I finally saw it today. It wasnt quite what I had hoped for. Way too much CGI and a script that was awkward. It falls way short of even the Temple of Doom. Im amazed they got it wrong.

Scenes that were wrong:

1) The fridge flying miles through the air after the nuclear explosion. Corny and weak. Indy isnt even bruised.

2) The weird monkey swinging shit.

3) Fucking groundhog mutants everywhere.

4) LeBouf or whatever his name is...doing ballet between two vehicles. It looked fake, was fake and I just cannot buy that drivel.

5) Marian driving straight off the cliff onto a swinging tree. Too much and too much akin to the Transformers generation.

6) Then 3 huge waterfall drops in a jeep/truck. People barely get through 1 Niagra and here we have 3 Niagra falls and in a Russian jeep?

7) No real connection between the characters. Mac has no depth at all. Just irritates me when he shouts "Jonesy"!!! A crap character. Marion?? Too contrived. The wedding scene at the end made me want to vomit.

The ants were this years nasties. CGI ones of course. No sense of menace. Completely fake and perfectly easy to shoot.

9) The rubber snake. WTF??

I could go on...It was watchable and I was seldom bored, but I did find myself shaking my head a lot. It just wasnt Indy as we know him, its been upgraded and cleaned up but lost all sense of depth. Unfortunate because it could have been a modern classic. I was let down by that.

This sux because I was really looking forward to it... I kind of had a feeling they would be like "more is better", and in attempts to make every stunt bigger, and every CGI better, they would miss the benifits of having a really good plot,,, which was what the old Indiana movies were about.... Just throw the odd "funny" but you know, somewhat realistic stunt in,,, and it would be a cool Indy film like the previous..... It sounds like the pulled the old Hollywood Bigger is Better,,,,, and bigger wasn't better in this case....

It is watchable, but you just watch certain scenes and just think "No" and shake your head. The first film always has you on the edge. The second has a structure that works and the third has the comedy and depth. This doesnt find enough in common with any of the others, but most importantly doesnt have enough to make it stand apart.

I recommend viewing it because maybe you will like it more than I did. It wasnt a bad film especially compared to films like The Mummy. But it doesnt stand up to the first 3 Indy films IMO...
